Fun, but not flawless 18 May 2009
Format:Paperback
Asian Vegetables is a great book for gardeners who want to grow something a little bit out of the ordinary. There's some wonderful plants included, and the author is very open about which stand a chance in the British climate, and those that do not.

There are colour pictures throughout, although not all are labelled - which occasionally leaves you struggling to identify the subject. There are also a few minor errors that should have been caught by the proofreader.

All-in-all this is a thoroughly researched and helpful book, and the author has practical experience of growing these plants and an obvious love of the subject. If you're into growing unusual plants, this is definitely a volume you should have on your bookshelf.

Fascinating Stuff 10 Mar 2009
Format:Paperback
I came to this book after reading Growing Unusual Vegetables: Weird and Wonderful Vegetables and How to Grow Them and I really like it on many levels - mainly as a gardener it offers the chance to grow some new and interesting edibles with detailed but eminently sensible growing instructions helped by sensible and useful colour pictures. The author Sally Cunningham obviously knows hers stuff. What I also like is the tips on buying the veg from the shops, what to look for and some interesting information on nutritional values and other uses. Sensibly it also says what you can't grow to an edible state and what can just be fun to have a go at growing. All in all a very different book from the usual celebrity obsessed rehashes of the same old gardening tips.

Disappointed 12 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback
I wanted to like Asian Vegetables. However, after I found so many obvious errors - street names, towns, postcodes, websites, words like "pices", expressions like "see page x" that I started to wonder. Did anyone ever proofread it? Did a similar amount of care go into the less obvious? A particular plant is hardy to a particular temperature - well, perhaps it is, but perhaps it isn't - and if you don't trust a guide book it rather loses the point.
