Product Description

book jacket

Ashiwaza is the heart of good judo and very few judoka progress far without one of the four techniques covered in Ashiwaza II. Ouchi-gari and kouchi-gari always figure relatively high in the scoring results in major championships because they can be used to great effect against decisive and awkward opponents.

But as America's lightweight champion Michael Swain shows, precision is crucial to success. As a noted stylist he used these techniques repeatedly against bigger and stronger men in both randori and competition. He explains how ouchi-gari in particular enabled him to survive when he first went to Japan to study judo as a raw teenager. On the way to his world title in 1987 he threw the Japanese champion with ouchi-gari.

The beginner starts with a reap or a hook. But a proper ouchi-gari, kouchi-gari, kosoto-gari or hiza-guruma as explained by Swain will open the door to a much deeper, richer understanding of these ashiwaza and to greater effectiveness on the judo mat.

excellent 8 April 2001
Ashiwaza 2 like the rest of the ippon books is very much essential for any serious judokas. From this book, i very much improved on techniqures such as ouchi-gari. The advantages of this book are that it has very clear pictures and explainations. The explainations are also kept brief to avoid boredom. It showed many different varaitions of a single technique and also its combination throw. To be honest, this book is indeed worth investing but it has one disadvantage. Most of the demostrations have been done from a left-handed point of view because Michael Swain is a left-handed judo player. This may be difficult for beginners to grasp easily.

Judo foot and leg techniques 10 Jan 2006
By Neil A. Ohlenkamp - Published on Amazon.com
This book is 111 pages covering only 4 basic judo foot or leg throws -- ouchi gari, kouchi gari, kosoto gari, and hiza guruma. The beauty of the book is that it offers great suggestions and variations to make each throw your own specialty. Not restricted to just showing the basic position that is in most judo books, the author (a 1987 World Champion) shows the most effective and up-to-date variations for each throw as used in international competition.

I highly recommend the book if you want to understand how to make these throws work against the best in the world. Especially if you know the basics already but can't get them to work for you, pick up this book and begin practicing how to really apply them against a resisting opponent. Even if you don't want to learn these throws, you better get this book so you will know how to prevent them from happening to you. Fortunately the book includes counters for each throw.

A good book. 16 Mar 2007
By J. Slade - Published on Amazon.com
This is a fine book, but ouchi-gari arguably merits it own book, instead of sharing space. Also, given the nature of ashiwaza finishes, it would have been nice to see some discussion & demonstration of newaza. (As in the 1st Ashiwaza book in this series.) That said, the material that is covered is great.
