This is an excellent loom. Well made and sturdy. I was sceptical about the cogs and ratchet being made of plastic but these parts have not been skimp on and are robust and sturdy.
I coated my loom with danish oil thinned with white spirit before assembling it.
I also rubbed candle wax in all the screws, this helps them go in the wood more easily.
The loom comes with assembly instructions but not weaving instructions. However there are many good books on the market as well as instructions on the Internet and YouTube.
The Ashford site also has video instructions on how to set up the loom and warp it, worth watching.
I have purchased the double heddle option which makes the loom more versatile. On YouTube there are demonstrations on how to use the double heddle on the loom as well as how to use a weaving stick at the back of the loom.
The loom comes with cardboard spacers which are inserted onto the back roller as the warp threads are wound on to prevent the threads sinking into each other and altering the tension of individual threads.
This is a great introduction into weaving before spending hundreds on a more sophisticated loom.
I chose the 60cm width as I thought that it gave more scope for weaving projects than the 40cm loom for a fraction more in price. I felt that the larger loom was too bulky.
I chose this loom rather than one of the folding looms as I believe it to be sturdier. I have also heard reports that constantly folding the loom interferes with the tension of the warp threads.
This loom is small enough to take to weaving classes, for storage it slides neatly under a bed or can be hung from a couple of hooks on the wall.
The loom comes with a 7.5 dpi heddle which is sutable for weaving with 4ply or double knitting wool.
