Product Description

Gloriously and comprehensively, England won the 2010/11 Ashes series in Australia.

It s been 24 years since England were on top, down under, but it was well worth the wait! It was a campaign cleverly prepared and brilliantly executed by captain Andrew Strauss, coach Andy Flower and their national team of heroes.

This is the definitive Official Highlights of England s comprehensive 3-1 triumph in the 2010/11 Ashes series. Alastair Cook, Man of the Series, mesmerised the Australians scoring nearly 800 runs in the series; Jimmy Anderson proved he is one of the premier fast bowlers in the world and from number one to eleven England outplayed Australia in every aspect of the game. Runs were scored, wickets were taken, and the records tumbled. The first Test in Brisbane ended in a draw after Cook and Jonathan Trott tore into the Aussie attack with a record partnership of 329. In Adelaide it was Kevin Pietersen who took centre stage with a double century as England won by an innings. After a setback in Perth, back came England to dominate in Melbourne and Sydney and win both Tests, again by an innings another record! In front of 20,000 joyous Barmy Army fans, Chris Tremlett took the final Aussie wicket and the celebration really started. England s victorious Ashes tour Down Under will live long in the memory of every English fan and player.

After almost a quarter of a century of losses in Australia, England has finally earned the bragging rights, the respect of the entire cricket-world ... and of course - the 2010/11 Ashes in Australia.

Over nine hours of incredible 2010/11 Ashes action the urn remains in England... Enjoy!

After UK Channel 4's superb coverage of the 2005 Ashes and Sky Sports almost-as-good efforts for 2009, this is something of a let down. (I didn't get the DVD set of the 2006-7 series. Funny that.) One problem was the lack of partisanship. Obviously you couldn't expect Australia's Channel 9 to side with the Poms, but even an entirely Australian perspective, with recriminations, criticism of the selectors and occasional digs at the players, would have been better than this milk-and-water stuff. Then there is the lack of incidental material such as the warm-up matches and the press coverage. And finally the paucity of stats and analysis - if you're mad enough about cricket to buy a 5 disc set of a series you'll almost certainly want huge dollops of stats, trivia and bowling maps - I certainly did. There's no justification really - with 5 discs to play with there is plenty of room for more.

But this is not to say that you shouldn't buy the set if you are a cricophile Pom (or a Pom-supporter for the series) - it's still compulsory. I'm sorry, but a lukewarm review doesn't absolve you of your duty.

PS. I remember that stupid cartoon duck waddling across Channel 9's screen back in the World Series Cricket days. I thought it was mildly amusing the first time I saw it, but soon came to hate it. I didn't know it was still there. So if anyone from Channel 9 is reading - please get rid of it!

PPS. Why aren't there more DVD sets of England Ashes victories? There's just one disc of Botham's Ashes (Headingley) even though there are old VHS's of the entire series. And there's nothing at all on Illingworth's Ashes (there's a bit of one test on an "England's Six of the Best" disc which suggests they should be able to put together at least one disc dedicated to the series), nor on Gatting & Chris Broad's successful tour. I would even buy a set of the one-sided home series in the mid-eighties just to watch Gower and Robinson thrash them around the ground at Edgbaston again.

On one level, this DVD set does precisely what it says on the box. It is a five DVD set of the highlights of the 2010/11 Ashes series in Australia which England won 3-1. For that I give it 4 stars. That is precisely what it is, no frills, no extras, 5 tests, 5 DVDs. And for an England cricket fan that is perfectly adequate.

My first minor grumble, and one of the reasons why I can't give it 5 stars is the awful, stupid marketing on the box. It is portrayed as the Greatest Series Ever. The marketing twonk who came up with that one clearly knows nothing whatsoever about cricket. One better than average side played out of its skin to beat an average side playing badly. The greatest series ever that doth not make.

The second grumble is the one eyed commentary. The awful braying, from Mark Taylor in particular, every time an Aussie does something not totally incompetent is almost sickening. The only redeeming feature is listening to the triumphalism when Peter Siddle takes a hat trick on the first day, knowing what is actually going to transpire.

The lack of extras is really what marks this DVD down from 5 stars. In a cricket DVD one does rather expect stats, analysis, reaction. We're cricket fans for goodness sake, we are stattos to a person.

Oh and its a bit of a shame that the commentary doesn't contain the funniest thing ever siad - Shane Warne "You've got to feel sorry for Ricky Ponting".

Still, despite that griping, you can't damage the underlying joy of this too much, so I have to recommend it.

9 hours of England's victorious Ashes series Down Under should not be sniffed at and overall I enjoyed reliving those great moments.

However, I would have liked to have seen more (any) off-camera type moments that you don't normally get to see when watching the game. Things such as comments picked up on stump cam for example. However this is a minor gripe.

What was slightly more annoying though was the fact that this is Channel 9 and Cricket Australia's DVD, rather than a Sky/ECB collaboration.
Now, this may have been in the small print somewhere that I missed before buying the DVD, and to be fair their logos are on the cover, but I do think this should be made clearer as this makes a huge difference to your enjoyment of watching the tests.
Commentary tends to be mildly-extremely biased (as you would conversely expect if this had been a Sky production), and I would have much preferred to hear the likes of Beefy and Bumble nattering on.

Anyway, this is down to your particular taste but I just thought it worth mentioning as this stopped me giving it 4 stars.

Good series - poor commentary.
The cricket is great, but I agree with other reviewers - the commentary is bland. Anything - some Aussie bias, or some English bias, would have been good. Read more

Excellent DVD, A must for any English cricket fan. A refreshing change to hear a different commentary team other than the Sky commentators. Would recommend.
