In 1968, fresh out of a Utah college, I was hired as a public affairs specialist at the Naval Air Station in Alameda. I met another fresh out of school, girl from Illinois. She was
working at the Oakland Tribune. There was a columnist there, who was a brilliant writer and wise observer of the world. We read his beautiful, funny prose and marveled
at his storytelling.
We grew up, married, and ended up raising our families, each where we started out. We wrote letters for 43 years. I received the last one last March, exactly two weeks before
my dearest friend was lost to cancer.
I then started thinking about Mr. Martinez and ordered this book. I've read it twice since receiving it and he still has the quiet intelligent small stories that represent the reality
we each live.
He once said, that most everyday problems were better than having a stick growing out of one's nose. When things were dark, Patricia & I would use this phrase. When she
was diagnosed, she wrote that she had found something definitely worse than having a stick growing from her nose. I could hear her laughter of that one...
There is a very good reason that Al Martinez won the Pulitzer. It is well deserved. I am grateful for all the words he as put together so beautifully. It's a good to read these
precious words once more.
