Biography

Kyla La Grange has a startling voice and the ability to write songs that convey, in their own torrid, tumultuous way, the unpredictability of the human heart. They are songs that capture what it is like to be young and in (and out of) love, delivered through music that is rock, only without the bludgeoning crassness of that genre, and pop in the sense that it is destined, but not designed, for ... Product Description

Ashes is Kyla’s debut album. "Writing songs was something I always did because I felt like it was the only way I could release all the noise and cluttered emotions inside my head. It was, and is, an escape." Says Kyla.
“It’s a place where I can be alone and immerse myself in emotions that I don't really know how to handle in real life."
This is the deluxe edition with three extra tracks.

It was way back in November 2010 that my brother, sister and myself saw Kyla as a support act in Birmingham. Support acts can be a surprise (that's if people aren't rude enough to talk all the way through it), and Kyla was amazing, much better than the main act.

18 months is a long time to wait for an album and expectations can build so high that you end up disappointed with the final result, but I'm glad to say that this album is a stunner. Every track seems to be beautifully written and performed, it sometimes has a hint of Kate Bush or Florence in there which is no bad thing and gives you an idea of what this album sounds like.

Personal favourites on the album are To Be Torn, Vampire Smile, Heavy Stone and The River but it's difficult to pick stand out track when there isn't a duff track on here. Whether you're 21 (my brother) or 42 (me) this is an album for any age, have a listen to the mp3 previews and decide for yourself..

P.S. get the deluxe edition the extra 3 tracks are worth the extra outlay.

I can only hope that this is the beginning of something great.

The only problem I have with this release is the 'hidden' track - this just doesn't work with mp3s.

Heard a couple of tracks on Jo Whiley show so bought the album. It is really engaging and a good listen. Difficult to categorise Kyla. Ashes is definitely not X Factor type pop material. Kyla's Vocals on some tracks have shades of Kate Bush or Stevie Nicks but most with full band instrumentals; a couple even have the slightest touch of Florence Welch; some are uniquely Kyla. Try it, I don't think anyone will find nothing they like on this CD.

This review comes from an internet game. You buy an album you've never heard of from a shop. Then you write your impression of it before and after listening to it for the first time.

---BEFORE LISTENING TO IT---

WHY DID YOU SELECT THIS ONE? It was cheap and the cover of a pretty girl dancing made me think: a pop album by a girl singer with a name that is close to Kylie. At this price, why not?

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE COVER? It's a pretty girl dancing. It sold it to me before I looked at the track list. The song titles sound par for the course for a Kylie style pop album. `To Be Torn', `Been Better' and `You Let It Go' suggest standard songwriting of no great originality. I bought the Deluxe Edition which has blander grey artwork and the picture is now in negative. It's not as nice as the standard version. The upside (perhaps?) is that this edition comes with three extra songs.

WHAT TYPE OF MUSIC ARE YOU REALISTICALLY EXPECTING? Dance-pop. Something about it suggests a very compressed and controlled, austerely flamboyant production style like Metric (a pop band that sound like they are playing in an expensive five star hotel lobby) or Joy Division (all emotion suppressed to an ember by the producer).

BEST CASE SCENARIO IT WILL SOUND LIKE? Aphrodite era Kylie Minogue with a hint of Metric.

WORST CASE SCENARIO IT WILL SOUND LIKE? Kyla could be a guy as far as I know. Men should not sing pop music. A pop song not sung by a woman is a wasted track.

HIGH, LOW OR MIDDLING EXPECTATIONS? Mildly high. I don't think it's going to be a great album, but I can imagine it having a slew of good songs that I'll be only too happy to play again and again.
