Product Description

Gently surreal comedy directed by Spanish auteur Luis Buñuel. A young bridegroom, Oliverio (Esteban Marquez), is called away on his wedding day to settle matters on behalf of his dying mother. When he arrives at the family home he quickly realises that his brothers have been neglecting their mother's care in favour of plotting how to squander her inheritance. In order to get the will altered to protect her wishes, he embarks upon an eventful two-day bus journey during which he meets many odd characters and is faced with new temptations at every turn.

Product Description

United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: Spanish ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), English ( Subtitles ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Black & White, Interactive Menu, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: ASCENT TO HEAVEN is a life affirming comedy/drama that centres on Oliverio, a young newly wed enjoying his honeymoon. The peace and solitude is soon shattered when Oliverio brothers arrive and insist on taking him home to see their ailing mother. Once back, Oliverio learns of his motherÂ's concerns; realising that she has little time left and that her other sons are not to be trusted, Oliverio is charged with finding a solicitor to legitimise his mother's will. Easy? Not quite, as Oliverio soon fins out when he is forced to take an unforgettable journey on a beaten-up bus, across rivers, mountains and forests. This lost classic from Luis Bunuel (LE CHIEN ANDALOU, BELLE DE JOUR) shows the director a t his most playful. 5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime gem 8 Mar 2007
Format:DVD
Luis Bunuel's films are some of the most special and beautiful in all of cinema. His major works like Belle de Jour, Viridiana, Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, Obscure Object of Desire are classics, but now we are able to see some of his more 'minor' works, like this sublime gem from 1951.

SUBIDA AL CIELO - ASCENT TO HEAVEN (or Mexican Bus Ride to give it it's rather ordinary US title) is a real delight. A dark comedy about a young son travelling across country in a rickety bus in order to secure a lawyer (and a will) for his dying mother is both touching and hilarious. Stuck on a vehicle with a bunch of priests, liars, prostitutes and vagabonds the young man is torn every-which-way as he tries to steer clear of temptation. The film also features an amazing, hallucinatory dream-sequence which is classic Bunuel.
