Another solid expansion for Ascension. 11 Jan 2012

Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
For those unfamiliar with Ascension at all, the game is a fantastically fun deck-building game that moves quickly and is easy to learn. As this is a review for a later version of the game, if you would like to read more about how the basic game plays I would recommend checking out some of the reviews for the original release, Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer.

I already own both Ascension Chronicle Of The Godslayer and Ascension: Return Of The Fallen Expansion, so while I realize this can be played by itself, I have only played with the other cards mixed in. However, the additions this expansion makes are pretty cool. There are two main changes: Events and Trophy Monsters. Events are a card type that get moved to a separate place on the game board when they are flipped up in the central row, and remain there until a new event shows up. There are five events total, one for each faction + one for the monsters. They always add a global effect, an ability which each player can use in a turn, and some other cards get a bonus depending on which event is out. The downside to these is that since I have both previous Ascension games mixed in, 5 events in a ~250 card deck means they don't come up very often. If you are playing this game as a standalone I think you'll see them be a bit more game-altering. The second major change to the game is Trophies. These are an ability on monster cards that allow you to take the monster after you defeat, and use the trophy ability whenever you want, but only once. For example, if a trophy event on a monster is "draw a card", you get that monster card once you defeat it and you can draw a card with it right away or save it for another turn. Overall, a very nice addition. There is also a new "Always available" monster called the Fanatic which has a trophy effect(you can only have one of them at a time, though).

One other new feature they made is the option of a solitaire game where you play against the strongest monster included in the set, Nemesis. I don't really think I'd enjoy playing the game solo though so I am not super familiar with the rules for the solitaire version.

If you don't own the core set, grab this instead. 28 Feb 2012

Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
The core-set of this game was introduced to me mid last year. It took some time to get used to the play mechanics because the game was poorly taught to me. After a few games, I finally got the "Reversed Magic The Gathering" concept down and begun to play like a pro. Ascension is very easy to learn when taught properly from a experienced player.

Note: This game is dark fantasy themed so it might not be suitable for the religious inclined.

The games concept is to build your deck from what is available in the center row. You use "mana-like" rune and power cards to acquire cards from the center row. As you acquire cards from the center row, new cards are faced to replace the vacant spot(s) on the board. The game continues until all honor rocks have been gained by players. Then players count the star symbols on their cards + honor rocks & the highest point player wins. Once you are familiar with the cards, the game is fast paced & you will be constantly drawing cards, discarding, & shuffling in continuous rhythm with your opponents.

From my past conversations, people have compared Ascension inferior to a similar game known as Dominion. Dominion is a deck building game but it is not the same as Ascension. Dominion is more comparable to old school Gin Rummy while Ascension is more comparable to Magic The Gathering.

Since I've had played Ascension several times in the past, I decided to make Ascension - Storm of Souls my first purchase into this bracket of gaming. Ascension - Storm of Souls comes with everything you need to play.

If you are contemplating on purchasing Ascension for the first time, purchase Ascension - Storm of Souls vs. the core set (Chronicle of the Godslayer). You will be par with the evolution of the game, rules, & other experienced players with the Storm of Souls set.

I highly recommend protective gaming sleeves for the cards because they will become damaged due to excessive shuffling & food grease from tabletop munchies.

Hit the Cultist one more time,

-Xonic

A wonderful expansion/standalone product! 31 Jan 2012

I'd recommend against mixing these cards with the original Ascension cards because of different material/thickness. However, these are perfect for playing with the Ascension: Return Of The Fallen Expansion (for amazing 6-player matches).

The new Event and Trophy Monster gameplay mechanics are a fun addition and the cards are great. I can't recommend this expansion enough for fans of Ascension and newcomers to the game.
