Goldie Lookin Chain are best know for their comedy rapping, ranging from satirical to just plain silly, and for their clever use of samples. Yet Asbo 4 Life is the band's outstanding album - and it was achieved without a single sample.

All lyrics are credited to the band and all music and production to band member P.Xain aka Rhys. Perhaps that's what makes this more consistent than their previous albums.

As pure pop songs, the standout tracks are the addictive Everybody is a DJ, Mister Fahrenheit, the single By Any Means Necessaryand singalong anthem New Day. Equally deserving of mention are Apathy, Nothing Ever Happens and Unemployed & Overdrawn, tuneful tales of small town woe with veiled messages about life in modern Britain.

Asbo is worth buying just to hear Maggot speaking French on Garlic Bread, a lament to girlfriends lost which walks a fine line between classic ballad and post-pub dirge.

This album goes to show that the GLC can do perfectly well without sampling other people's records. In fact, not doing so has allowed their raw talent to shine through.

The boys have covered a lot of bases in their previous releases and have probably run a bit low on material. Gone is the charming dodging and robbing. Instead it's a bit more confrontational instead of laughing at their situation. A bit low on empathy with the audience.Golddigga Boutique Jacket Ladies

A brave change for the GLC, from urban welsh rap using samples to creating a new and original score to rap and sing to, the result is great, I recieved the albun yesterday and havent stopped listening yet, still verry much the GLC this is well worth a listen for an original slice of port life.

when did these guys stop being a parody comedy novelty act and start trying to make "proper music"?

i prefered when my mother had a penis and my missus was a nutter

As well as the catchy songs and funny lyrics that will keep me buying and watching the GLC till I die, there's a real feeling of urban desperation from this album. Newport is not a nice place and they've captured that feeling you get on the streets of the port. Excellent stuff! This is a really really good album and I'd recommend it to anyone not just hip hop fans. No samples this time just great musical talent.
