Book Description

31 May 2002 1857540573 978-1857540574
This collection offers the wise, wickedly wry extended essays that Beer wrote for the London Review of Books, the Listener, and the Times Literary Supplement during the last 25 years of her life. Borrowing literary examples from Dickens, Owen, and Shakespeare, Beer's satire belongs to the generation including D. J. Enright and Donald Davie and covers remarkably varied subjects. A critic of contemporary literary trends and religious fervor, Beer was known by one critic as "a religious poet stripped of the blurring consolations of religion."

It's the basis of Gosse's and Winterton's reputation, but more modest ex-Brethren Beer and Bamforth (Iain) are no whit less cherishable. Sarah Rigby has done sterling work whittling thirty years' worth of reviews down to this scintillating selection. Logical, precise, rational - and irreverent - are all words she uses to describe her distinctive tone, but above all honest; I'm afraid the cliché 'like a breath of fresh air' blows irresistably in (like a breath of stale air). Is a second selection too much to hope for?

I'd love to review her poems also, but the amazon record for her Collected has got wonderfully mixed up with the collecteds of Patrick Kavanagh, Padraic Fallon and Sean Rafferty (all Carcanet) - does no-one care?
