Reviews

All 10 episodes from the fourth series of the popular BBC sitcom, starring Geoffrey Palmer and Judi Dench as Lionel Hardcastle and Jean Pargeter, a couple who are re-united after being out of touch with each other for 38 years. Their brief romance in the early 1950s was cut short when Lionel was posted off to the Korean War - but will things run more smoothly now that they are both older and wiser? In this series, an American TV company suggests that their love affair might make a good miniseries, but Lionel gets suspicious when they want him to spice up some of the stories.

Series four of As Time Goes By is still as witty, warm and wonderful as the first three. With Dame Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer leading the pack there isn't much that can go wrong but unlike most series, the plot in this season is actually fresher and more playful than the first three. With its trademark style of real and exasperating situations, which only Jean and Lionel could get themselves into, and with numerous appearences of 'Rocky' and 'Madge' (Rock On!) there is no pleasanter way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Series 4

Sandy joins the household a clever move on writer's part giving Judith someone to talk to. Most of this series centres on firstly getting rid of Gwen Flack and then Jean and Lionel's wedding. The contrast between Lionel's wedding arrangements and Jean's full blown battle plans is hilarious. The only episode Im not that fond of is the one with Eric in, it's not a bad episode I just think its placing in the series jars a little bit, being straight after the wedding. And would have done better in a later series, but that's just my opinion. The final episode is a bitter sweet, although funny you realise what a hash the Americans have made of Lionel's script. I read some where this storyline was taken form Bob Larby's own experiences of dealing with American television? Anyhow it's a great four series.

Ok so Jean and Lionel have got married ...where can there story go now? Well it's true they have pretty much come all the way in relationship terms, but there is Judy and Alistair to follow and Sandy.

Prompted to buy this when viewing the odd programme whilst on holiday via BBC Entertainment channel. The ensuing nostalgia encouraged me to buy the complete series when I returned home and is giving my wife and I a great deal of pleasure with its gentle humour. No regrets!

Have thoroughly enjoyed every episode of As Time Goes By.
My other half and i really enjoy the older comedys such as Only Fools and Horses, Faulty Towers, Keeping Up Appearances etc, so we've been searching for them all and watching them.
We love Lionels character, so blunt and sarcastic but endearing aswel. Jean and Lionels relationship is great to watch, from beginning, through the marriage.
I have ordered series 5 so we're both looking forward to see what is to come.

Can't beat the old comedys!!

Series 4 of a wonderful, gentle comedy. We bought the entire set, and the series 4 dvd was faulty, so Amazon replaced it. The replacement dvd 4 became faulty after a while, so we bought this to replace it. The series is fantastic, so full of brilliant characterisations and a top-class script, which the cast takes full advantage of. I would recommend this series to anyone who wants aseries to watch that is full of humour and lifelike situations.

In this series Sandy moves in with Lionel, Jean and Judith. However, the main focus of the series is Lionel's mini-series and him getting a secretary from Jean to help him with the re-writes. Towards the end Lionel finally proposes to Jean and wedding preparations get underway. Jean being accused of stealing a wedding dress was one of the funniest moments!
I love this programme and Series 4 does not disappoint!

It's hard to imagine a better way to spend an evening than watching episodes from this collection. Just like spending the time with old friends. If you like Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer, get it now.
