Product Description

Product Description

Called As Pilgrims Progress: Learning How Christians Can Walk Hand in Hand When They Don't See Eye to Eye, the book is written in a very simple, experiential, Evangelical style, but is quite profound. Rather than focusing on institution/theological ecumenism, the book advocates a much more personal pursuit of unity, building on common faith, discipleship, and Christian identity, with a willingness to learn from and appreciate other Christian traditions. It has the merit of being enormously appreciative of both traditions and accurate in its portrayal of them. This is a message that needs to be heard, particularly coming from two Evangelical pastors, though I wish Catholic priests could be as appreciative of Evangelical Christianity. - Thomas P. Rausch, S.J.

This review is from: As Pilgrims Progress: Learning How Christians Can Walk Hand in Hand When They Don't See Eye to Eye. (Paperback)
This book is written to help Christians from different traditions better understand each other. It is written from a perspective that unity in essentials can be a basis for liberty in non-essentials. From this shared foundation of basic, or what C.S. Lewis called "mere", Christianity, the book explores how the differences between the various traditions arise.

It promotes a view that many of these secondary differences in theology, spirituality and practice arise as gifts that the Holy Spirit gave to particular communities to help them in particular circumstances. This view enables a more positive attitude to be expressed, and gives scope that our differences might be gifts to share, rather than causes of division.

Written to be accessible to a lay readership, it is also suited to those commencing studies in this area by the addition of detailed end notes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Valuable insights on a critical topic, 7 Mar 2007
By Richard Burton - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: As Pilgrims Progress: Learning How Christians Can Walk Hand in Hand When They Don't See Eye to Eye. (Paperback)
This is an important book about Christian unity, which the Bible tells us is close to God's heart. The book's subtitle sums up its goal and contents well: "Learning how Christians can walk hand-in-hand when they don't see eye-to-eye." The authors, while academically sound, are writing from their own first-hand experiences. The book is well-balanced, and offers tools to help Christians build rich relationships with other followers of Christ outside of their own faith community without discounting or giving up the distinctives of their faith community.
