5.0 out of 5 stars Moving in the right direction, 16 Oct 2004
By Malcolm (Dundee, Scotland) - See all my reviews
On their last album, When Do We Start Fighting, Seafood fitted quite nicely into the emo bracket along with Rival Schools, Jimmy Eat World and other similar bands. While they have never been the most original of bands, their songwriting talents, and their ability to capture moods has made them stand out in that sort of company. This release, while hardy original, moves away from such easy categorising, and comes off as one of the best albums of the year. As others have mentioned, most of the songs are quite similar in pace, but this adds to the overall feeling of the album rather than making it dull. Wheras their last album was really just a bunch of songs (extremely good ones nonetheless), this time round the feel is of one body of work, that has to be listened to in its entirety to be appreciated in full. Stand out tracks would have to be 'Heat Walks Against Me', which has something of a vintage Pumpkins feel about it, forthcoming single, 'Sleepover', with its sublime buildup and comedown, and the absoloutly gorgeous 'No Sense of Home'.
There is definetely a softening in their sound, with 'Good Reason' being the only reminder of their previous, more punky form, but for the broad minded fan there is more to be found here than on any records by their contemporaries. The only other similar band which really come close to chanelling their emotions this well would be Idlewild, and god only knows what their next album is going to sound like.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great album from an amazing band, 9 Jun 2004
I loved this album, different from what they've done before but extremely beautiful. Mellow songs perfect for summer with some amazing lyrics as alway.
This band is one of the great unexploited ones out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Melodic Masterpiece?, 5 May 2006
By SL Walker-Penn "SiestaMusic" (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have always held Seafood in high opinion after seeing them live on numerous occasions and listening to 'Surviving The Quiet' and 'When Do We Start Fighting'.

After the departure of Charles MacLeod I was worried that 'As The Cry Flows' was only ever going to be an attemp to keep a good thing going without one of the core elements.

Far from it.

'As The Cry Flows' contains all the elements that make Seafood a fantastic band. The combination of David and Caroline's voices gives the album a subtle and moving feel, and the combination of songs such as 'Heat Walks Against Me' and 'I Dreamt We Ruled The Sun' show just how versatile Seafood can be.

This album is more mellow than their earlier material but there is still enough energy to ensure that it is at no point dull, and there are still songs like 'Good Reason' to remind listeners of 'Cloaking' and 'Western Battle'.

All in all 'A Melodic Masterpiece' is a pretty good description of what is essentially a very mature and enjoyable album and it is recommended to music fans of any genre, even if you have never heard of Seafood before.
