Biography

Formed in Newcastle upon Tyne during 1962 and 1963 when Eric Burdon joined the Alan Price Rhythm and Blues Combo, the original line-up comprised Eric Burdon (vocals), Alan Price (organ and keyboards), Hilton Valentine (guitar), John Steel (drums), and Bryan "Chas" Chandler (bass). They were dubbed "animals" because of their wild stage act and the name stuck. The ... Read more in Amazon's The Animals Store

This 2003 EMI Gold (24 track) compilation covers most of The Animals singles (A's, B's & EP's) they released for the label all on one disk. This was the time when The Animals were in their original incarnation, the supposed 'best period' with Chas Chandler (bass), Alan Price (keyboards), John Steel (drums) and Hilton Valentine (guitar), their music during this time was blues, rock and soul with Eric Burdon's excellent soulful and powerful gritty vocals on top.

Between 1964 - 1965 The Animals released two albums, The Animals and Animal Tracks where some or most of these songs on here were culled from and released as EP's and singles. Just before they left EMI Records Price departed the group, he was then replaced by keyboardist Dave Rowberry, regardless they carried on recording with EMI releasing classics like 'We Gotta Get Out Of This Place' and 'It's My Life', between 1966 - 1968 Eric Burdon revamped The Animals personnel, the music, switched to a couple of other record labels and got credited as Eric Burdon And The Animals and released a further six also albums.

As for this CD the mastering is excellent with a good clear sound, though the notes inside and original EP/singles sleeve covers are kept to the minimal, despite this, it is still a great bargain compared to the other one disk compilations covering The Animals period on EMI Records.

If you want to get a compilation with the 'new' Animals I recommend Polydor's 1991 released 15 track compilation, The Best Of Eric Burdon And The Animals 1966 - 1968, (the one with the psychedelic blue face Eric) it covers this period well, with these both compilations it is cheaper then Raven Records single disk (Absolute Animals 1964 - 1968) combined. On a last note check out the excellent The Best Of Eric Burdon & WAR to add to your collection.

This cd is one of the best if you are an Animals fan
They made some great b sides especially Club A Go Go which would have been a big hit if released as an A side
Its better than the 1965 Vinyl release Animal Tracks
Once again fabulous cd

I remember way back in the 60's, playing in a band, sitting and listening to these songs on vinyl and trying to pick out the bass line. long gone are those days but some of these tracks I have not heard since the 60's and I loved hearing them again

Single disk collection of The Animals' vibrant, driving rhythm and blues. All songs are from 1964-65 but the standard remains high with very little filler. Eric Burdon's vocals and Alan Price's organ playing both stand out throughout. The CD sound quality is excellent and it's great value.

Given the multiple talents in this group, it is not surprising that they went their separate ways.

Eric's vocals and Georgies atmospheric organ make some of these tracks Clasics.

House of The Rising Sun by the Animals is the definitive version of this song.
