I'm not sure that bigging yourself up as President Obama's favourite new artis is necessarily a good thing, what with his domestic and international failings, but as press bumph goes, it's certainly unique.
Basically, this is what people who know about this sort of thing call neo-soul. Presumably because the phrase r'n'b has been misappropriated by all sorts of dreadful, soulless cretins. Meanwhile, back on planet soul, folks like Anthony David are going around creating fairly old-fashioned, but thoroughly enjoyable albums.
Granted, there are a couple too many songs with the dreaded word "featuring" alongside it, and I can happily spend the rest of my life not listening to good songs being unnecessarily interrupted by godawful raps mid-song, but in the main, it's the excellent tenor vocals of Mr David that are taking centre stage.
There are potential hits a-plenty, with the Motown sound of 'Reach Ya' and the socio-political 'god Said', particular highlights. One of the more interesting "featuring" moments even sees Mr David getting his cousin, Shawn Stockman from Boyz II Men, along for an interesting cover of the Tears For Fears tune, 'Everybody Wants To Rule The World'.
But it's his own songwriting that marks out what a talent Mr David is, as he ranges from classic soul to the bluesy vibe of 'Getaround' and the Prince-tinged 'Girlfriend'. It's a shame that the label chose the weakest cut, '`4Evermore' as the first single, but if listeners get past that, then they'll find a real talent at work here.
