the name of this synth is apt - it really can sound brutish and thick but can also be used to produce delicate, ethereal sounds and switching between the two is incredibly easy.

i bought this synth because i was interested in the basics of making music, interested in getting down to the level of thinking of wave forms and their manipulation, and this synth offers just that: you construct the sound, primarily, through manipulating pure waveforms and then processing these. if this is what you want rather than using pre-sets then this is the synth for you and it's power, even at low volume levels, is phenomenal.

if you're looking for something fast, simple and 'classic' sounding then this is perhaps not the synth for you as there are no pre-sets and any set-up you find which you like you have to record by hand but if you want to micro-manage sound then this is for you.

Nice synthesizer, great sounds, poorly made keyboard. 28 Nov. 2013

The synthesizer, controls, and sounds are wonderful. Unfortunately, the weak link for the Arturia Minibrute is the keyboard. Mine came out of the box with the infamous broken key. The middle C key sticks up. I did some research on the Arturia groups, and it is a common issue with either a loose key bumper, or a broken mount the holds the bumper. Returning my first unit. I may try to order another unit, but am not getting my hopes up. Otherwise, the item was deliverered by Amazon very quickly.

Update: 11/30 - I had ordered another unit from Amazon through another vendor. It has the same issue with the broken middle C key. I believe this may be an issue with a certain batch of Minibrutes. I will be returning this as well. This unit was worse: there was a piece rattling inside the unit.

Update: 12/01 - I just went to a local big-box music chain store and picked up a fully functional unit. And all the keys were fine. They had 2 units in stock. One was the floor model, which had the broken C key! They brought me the one from the store room. I checked out the unit before purchasing. My advice is to not buy this sight unseen. Fortunately, Amazon service is amazing and returns are easy.

Update: 12/11 - Having finally obtaining a good unit, the Minibrute is GREAT! I assume Arturia just had a bad batch of defective units. My current unit works fine, and the keyboard has no issues. I love the fact that every parameter is controlled by a knob or slider. I am finally really understanding synthesis because this forces me to create my own sound from scratch. I used to own an Oberheim Matrix 6, but it was too complicated to program. After reading a little about synthesizers, I realize the Minibrute if JAM-PACKED with features (e.g. Midi-CV converter, multi wave mixer, arpeggiator, 2 LFOs, aftertouch, etc.) I'm amazed they can include all these features for just over $400. I looked at DSI, Oberheim, Moog, and a few others. You can't beat the price/features ratio of the Minibrute. Solid aluminum case, smooth and solid knobs and sliders, decent keyboard. There is even a promotion going on during the holidays. I got 2 FREE Arturia software download instruments. I chose the Oberheim SEM V and Moog Modular V and am controlling them with my Minibrute! This is EXCELLENT value. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE MINIBRUTE.

Update: 02/02 - I've had the Minibrute for a couple of months now. The keyboard is still doing fine. No issues. Ran the Minibrute into a really good keyboard amp/speaker combo and it sounds awesome. This is NOT a toy, but a real instrument. I've been comparing this to the Moog Minitaur and both are great little units. It is a shame that its reputation was tarnished due to initial defects with the keys. I figure, even if the keyboard lasts only a few years, it is still worth it to keep as a sound module. Overall, the unit is pretty sturdy. Keys are holding up so far. Will give another update in a few months.

Power Analog Synthesizer. The Price is a STEAL. 30 Jun. 2013
By Michael Walsh - Published on Amazon.com
PRICE: The Arturia MiniBrute has to be one of the best deals on the market currently for a single voice all analog synth. The price (currently under $500 on Amazon) is a steal for the amount of control you get with this synth - more hands-on control than most other analog synths on the market. Add to this USB MIDI connectivity and you have a MIDI controller and a full analog synth for a little more than an expensive MIDI controller. Bangin deal all around.

SOUND: All analog signal path with very crisp (and at times, thick) sound. Be aware that the MiniBrute does not sound like a Moog or a Roland SH-101 (I actually bought mine as an alternative to the very expensive SH-101). The filters in those machines sound very different than the filter in the MiniBrute. The Brute has a tendency to sound a bit buzzy and harsh, but this can be tempered by turning your Oscillator Mixer sliders down past 50% (the Brute is built to overdrive but you can use it in more subtle ways as well).

NO PRESETS: There are no presets and no availability for presets. But Arturia does include clever overlays that show you how to make different sorts of synth sounds by showing you where to place all the sliders and knobs. It also comes with a few blank overlays so that you can mark your own "presets" with a dry erase marker for future use.

IN USE: It's loud, It cuts the mix, and it can sound beastly. It can take some time to learn if you don't know about subtractive synthesis. But if you want to know how to program a synth, I can't think of a better recommendation to learn about oscillators, filters, LFOs, A/D/S/R, and waveforms.

I love mine and I don't think I'll ever sell it. A steal for the price and a unique sounding, versatile synth.

Read the forum articles on the Arturia website first... 25 April 2013

There seems to be a bunch of different problems with the synth, some serious. However, I'm still buying another one. The thing is just too much fun! I love the way the MiniBrute reinforces my learning. I'm going to control it with my 49 key MIDI controller. One forum entry said that it works great. There are cool YouTube videos showing the MiniBrute connected to an oscilloscope and putting out wonderfully instructive wave-shapes as its controls are tweaked. I also love the old school overlay templates. I'm using washable colored felt pens to mark on them. Damn, I really hope my new one works.

Simple, straight forward, pure fun. 3 Oct. 2013

It is truly an analog synthesiser which i love. may prove difficult to some. wouldnt recommend if you dont really enjoy working with hardware cuz this is the real deal!

Was a bit frustrating at first because this was my first analog synthesiser (despite owning others and being familiar of how they work). I overestimated how "old school" it was since if you make a mistake or dislike your sound, you are most likely having to go back to scratch since there are no presents. not at all a bad thing for me, it is what i wanted, but can be quickly annoying for people who werent prepared enough for it, as it can be time consuming to find a decent sound.

For all of you analog lovers, i wouldnt see why i wouldnt recommend this awesome synth, works great and is sturdy. SteinerParker filters sound sweet. no complaints, defo worth the buy.

my first synthesizer 14 May 2013
By 0abraham - Published on Amazon.com

I had to return this three times to amazon as it arrived with a key that looked like it had been physically pulled up from the unit, breaking the piece that connects it to the electronics board. Looked like someone either at the amazon supplier or at arturia had been intentionally damaging all of the units I received.

I finally went to a music store in a nearby town and picked one up after inspecting it and making sure nothing was wrong with it.

This is my first synthesizer, so I can't really compare it to anything else, but it is sooooo much fun. I love being able to see and manipulate every aspect of what is creating the sound. It comes with very nice preset cards that you can lay over the knobs and faders so that you can "save" your patches. Very solid construction. The knobs are tight so you can make very fine adjustments. Keys feel great. Love that I can use the keys' midi capabilities for ableton. Nice combo of classic analog and midi function.

Was a bit annoying receiving 3 broken units, but amazon makes it easy to return items with free return shipping, and UPS even picked up the package from my house. I guess that's the chance you take buying stuff online though.

I'm a novice, but I'm loving this thing !
