This is not really a toy. It's a tool for serious crafters and artists at a reasonable price. I guess photographers may also find it useful. You can use it as an aid for tracing and for stencil embossing.
It's best used in a darkened room. The light will then penetrate even mirror card and dark coloured cards. I was very impressed.
It's far superior to my old light box which I bought for about £12 and was frankly a waste of money. This one is a lot sturdier and great quality. I'm very happy with it.

Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
I'm so glad I didn't opt for a cheaper version (of which they're are many around). I bought this on the strength of seeing it in store as I'm interesting in hand-drawn animation, and wanted to have a pop at it myself. Aside from this, I know it'll have many other applications as I have experience in graphic arts, and after attempting some tracing it does the job superbly. Theirs also a nice little area to house your pencils/tools so they're not left on your desk.

I do have a few quibbles, though they're more personal matters. I've found the 'hum' noise coming from the bulb (an energy saving one) a little monotonous at times, specially if I'm concentrating hard. I'm quite aware of sound, but perhaps others may not notice it as much - I sometimes just stick iTunes on my computer for some light background music.

With regards to the light, it's a very nice output but does not stretch to it's full brightness across the whole of the workspace, because the bulb is at the top. Whether this is a problem depends on your application, of course.

The only other thing, as mentioned before, is that the bevel/groove which holds any background paper in place is a bit too tight, even too slim to fit two pieces of paper under. I would have like to have seen some removable pegs on the top or bottom to keep things in place better.

For the price however, this is essentially a very good unit that only suffers from some logical flaws. With it's grooved under-side for ease of carrying, energy efficient bulb, and large spread, this is a whole deal better than the cheap knock-offs at half the price.

Fantastic Lightbox 21 Jan 2011
Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
Of course, this lightbox isn't a toy. (I'm trying to think of how it could be fun?!) but it's very functional.

The lamp glows brightly, and despite other reviews I've read, I think it throws the light across the entire surface evenly. I also didn't notice any hum from the light but perhaps if it's left on for hours and hours?

Anyway, I'd say this is invaluable for any artist or crafter, and whilst it might be a small investment for a student, it's durable and portable and I really wouldn't be without it.

A great buy; I'd definitely recommend it.

NOT a toy......but a very useful bit of equipment for an artist
Why is this listed as a toy? I would rate it at 4.5 out of 5 for being a good artists lightbox on a low budget. Read more

Good for the price
This is quite light-weight plastic but seems sturdy enough. The light shines from 2 bulbs at the top edge so the light is a bit faded on the bottom edge, but overall it's good... Read more
