3.0 out of 5 stars Good coverage and easy to digest! 6 Sep 2004

Format:Paperback
Having read, or been forced to read, a selection of books on AI, this one is refreshing. The writing is approachable and easy to digest - its layout is easy on the eye and the book covers most of the common topics to a depth suitable for undergraduate courses. A refreshing change from the stanrdard but difficult-to-read Mitchell.
Some of the less formal writing can grate occasionally, but overall the enthusiasm of the young author does come across. I can't wait for the second edition!
Its tough for many authors to achieve the depth, maturity, balance, authority and thoughfulness of the classic Peter Norvig.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good coverage and easy to digest! 29 Sep 2004
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
A new book from a new author in a now mature field with both weak texts as well as classics. Ben Coppin does cover most of the essential core topics, but his writing is less than precise. I suspect it is intended to be approachable and friendly, which is certainly is. The "freshness" of the writing will appeal to undergraduates.

In places concise, and in places too verbose, this is still an excellent first edition. I look foreward to the second edition after some external editorship!

I suspect also that the author, who is clearnly keen, would have produced a more coherent work if he has chosen not to write a textbook but a more specialised text on his own areas of interest.

Overall, the book is certainly above average, and its fresh feel is an advantage. However, it doesn't replace the copy of Norvig on your bookshelf!
