Jonathan Coulton is most known as an independant artist releasing things over the Internet, to increasing success including writing featured tracks in some video games (e.g. Still Alive - Portal, re: Your Brains - Left 4 Dead). This album is his first full length effort to use a 'proper' professional studio, as opposed to recording it himself and is produced by TMBG's John Flansburgh.
The album itself, clearly sounds more polished than some of Coultons earlier work, however it manages to retain the charm and wit. Almost without exception the songs hit the mark with standouts such as Nemesis, Sucker Punch and Dissolve being excellent songs that deserve more exposure than they'll get.
Coulton also includes the songs he's written for the Portal games with new arrangements and different vocalists. Sara Quinn sings 'Still Alive' while Coulton himself takes on 'Want You Gone' (Both of which originally performed by the character Glados in game).
Some of the humour could be described as geeky and that suits Coulton's target audience perfectly.
There are lulls in the album, with the Susan Vega guest vocal (Now I Am an Arsonist) being the weak point for me, but of the 18 tracks most are excellent
He's also well worth catching live!
