I knew he could be funny. I didn't know he could be this good., 23 Nov 2011
By Neil Laslett - Published on Amazon.com
I'm fairly new to JoCo; I know him from his earlier Internet hits like "Code Monkey". Those early songs were funny and fun, rocking and geeky. But could he sustain that and turn it into real quality musicianship? The answer, in short, is "YES".
This is a smooth and elegant transition from basement to studio production; none of the fun, quirks, originality, or raw energy are lost. Much has been made of TMBG's John Flansburgh's role in the producer's seat, and while you can definitely hear a strong Flansburgh influence, JoCo's distinctive style isn't hampered in any way. The two styles blend and merge without harming the original. Both musicians are quirky, but while TMBG often breaks towards the weird, JoCo maintains a strong modern indy feel.
As for the songs: "Sticking it to Myself" is a rocking opener, funny, fun, and self-reflective. "Artificial Heart" is as quirky (and catchy) as anything. "Nemeses" has "indy hit" written all over it (in a good way). And the album continues...there's not a bad track here. You won't be disappointed.

Coulton does it again, 9 Nov 2011

I am always anxious when a singer/band I love releases a new album. What if it isn't as good as _insert_previous_album_title_here? Since this is Coulton's first studio album, I was even more worried than usual - in spite of the expertise offered by his TMBG friends.
I needn't have worried.
This album is absolutely amazing. Some songs, particularly "Good Morning, Tuscon" and "Want You Gone" have been played dozens - maybe even hundreds - of times since I bought my digital copy from Coulton's website in early September.
I was completely surprised to hear Suzanne Vega on "Now I am an Arsonist" and I have added Sara Quin's version of "Still Alive" to my list of "Coulton covers/versions that might be better than the (already amazing) original"!
This album has also led to a TMBG/JoCo tour - which has me so excited that I'll be attending my first concert in over ten years.
Je suis Rick Springfield!

Typically great but a little different, 9 Nov 2011

Full of catchy hooks and clever lyrics like all of JoCo's stuff, but this album is (in a good way) a bit more mainstream friendly than a lot of his thing-a-week work.
