Product Description

Product Description

The three stories in this book are about ordinary people, people like you and me; but they find themselves in surprising situations. Lord Arthur Savile, a rich man with no enemies, finds out that he must do something terrible before he can marry. Poor young Hughie Erskine gives money to an old beggar – but the beggar is not what he seems. And Lord Murchison falls in love with a mystery woman – but what is the strange secret behind the door in Cumnor Street? --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author

Known for his barbed wit, Oscar Wilde was one of the most successful late-Victorian playwrights and a great celebrity. The Importance of Being Earnest and The Picture of Dorian Gray are among his best known works. He is perhaps most famous for his trial, in which he eloquently defended homosexual love and was sentenced to two years of hard labor. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

This book contains 8 short stories: Lord Arthur Savile's Crime, The Canterville Ghost, The Model Millionaire, The Young King, The Fisherman and His Soul, The Portrait of Mr W.H, (and 2 stories for children:) The Happy Prince, and The Devoted Friend.
I always like the style of Wilde's writing. His is not so hard to read and the language is beautiful, you can quote so many.

Excellent Reading 31 Mar 1999

Format:Paperback
After his plays, Wilde's best work is undoubtedly his short stories. More free flowing than 'A Picture of Dorian Grey,' these stories for adults are thoroughly entertaining whilst showing the extent of their author's genius.

If you like the short stories of Dahl or Forsyth, Wilde's jovial and surprising stories are even better.

The book itself is ingenious, it opens cleverly and closes just as well!
And the story and the writing are just as stunning. Wilde tells a light and humorous story, complete with traditional Wilde quips and outrageous action!
