Product Description

'Swallows and Amazons' author Arthur Ransome is also remembered for his classic fishing book 'Rod and Line'. Channel 4's TV series captured both the spirit and place of Ransome's immortal book with his own original words faithfully spoken by the late Michael Hordern, himself a lifelong and passionate angler. Now Beckmann, with the assistance of Granada TV and the Arthur Ransome Estate, have succeeded in recovering and remastering the original programmes. The complete 12 programme series is now available in a double box video presentation. Volume 1: Back to the Stoneage? On talking to the fish Fisherman's patience Fishing in Lilliput Fish and the eclipse Carp Volume2: The local angler and the others Fly-tying in winter On watching fishermen Carelessness Chub The element of surprise

I never saw this little gem out in Australia when it was first shown on Channel 4 during the mid-eighties although I was aware of it from a TV tie-in book cover on a copy of Ransome's classic fishing essays I purchased at the time. After nearly a twenty year wait, the VHS version released a few years ago was, although a delight, also a bit of a trial, plagued as it was by a rather excessive number of video 'glitches'(white lines et al). This DVD, despite preserving the grainy quality of eighties video film the series was originally shot on, is a considerable improvement.

If you haven't seen this series, even if you are not particularly interested in fish or angling, do yourself a favour - Sir Michael Hordern's readings (and acting-out) from Ransome's essays, are a fantastic study of a great actor in his twilight years. Add to that, the haunting and intelligent musical score and beauty of the English countryside and you have a true piece of 'comfort TV' for a long winter night.

Sir Michael Horden takes on the role of Arthur Ransome reading from the collection of articles originally written for the Manchester Guardian in the 1920s, before Ransome started writing children's stories including Swallows and Amazons.

This is angling as it should be, no desire for big catches or big fish, but taking pleasure from the simplest of things. Tips are incidental, the object being to raise an amused or sympathetic response in the viewer to their shared obsession.

The fund of anecodotes about fishermen and their elusive prey makes it clear that neither species has changed that much in the interveening 80 years.

Sir Michael Horden is perfect as Ransome, not only has he his fabulous voice, but he is also a keen angler, and so can act out the pieces correctly.

Hugely entertaining

My only gripe here is the music, Hordern is superb! His narration and acting is a joy. The filming is wonderfully done with proper set up shots. It is a series that for me at least will stand repeat viewings and just improve.
