Amazon.co.uk Review
When you get lost between the moon and New York City (ahem), chances are you'll find yourself taking another look at this hit comedy starring Oscar-nominated Dudley Moore as the charmingly witty, perpetually drunken millionaire Arthur Bach. Arthur falls in love with a waitress (Liza Minelli) who doesn't care about his money but unfortunately Arthur's stern father wants him to marry a Waspy prima donna. The young lush turns to his wise and loyal butler (Oscar-winner John Gielgud) for assistance and advice. Arthur was a huge hit when released in 1981, as was its Oscar-winning theme song by Christopher Cross. Few remember that the movie was, sadly, the only one ever made by writer-director Steve Gordon, who died less than a year after the film's release. Consistently funny and heartwarming, Arthur was hailed as a tribute to the great romantic comedies of the 1930s. --Jeff Shannon

2.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgia isn't what it used to be., 4 Nov 2008
By P. Ruffle "foulplay" - See all my reviews

I can remember splitting my sides when I first saw Arthur at the cinema back in 1982. I had never seen the film since and when I bought the DVD I was looking forward to a treat.

I was quite disappointed. I still think the film is very funny and one of Dudley Moore's best but I don't think the DVD did it justice at all.

My biggest problem was with the sound. If you turned it up loud enough to hear all the punch lines then Arthur's cackling became absolutely deafening. The picture looked old and tired and frankly could have been mastered better.

I bought the film "10" at roughly the same time and there is no comparison. That film has aged a lot better although in fact it is slightly older.

I take nothing away from what other reviewers say about the film itself or the performance of the cast. Some films make the transfer to DVD quite easily. This one needs some help.

4.0 out of 5 stars Arthur- Dudley Moore's finest film, 16 Jan 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Arthur [VHS] [1981] (VHS Tape)
Dudley Moore is Arthur, the born-millionaire, alcoholic play boy who's daily routine consists of picking up prostitutes with a scotch on the rocks, spending ridiculous amounts of money and a scotch on the rocks and driving through central park in his stretch limo with a scotch on the rocks, until he meets the lovely Linda (Liza Minelli) the love of his life while she shoplifts from a designer store. All seems well until Arthur's family threaten to cut off his billion dollar inheritance if he marries Linda.

This is a tremendously witty and entertaining film with a wonderful cast of actors. It would appear this role was written only for Dudley Moore to play and John Gielgud is fabulously sarcastic and direct as Arthur's servant.

This film is a must-see 80's classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Comedy, 7 Sep 2005
What can I say about this film. It is pure comedy pefection. Dudley Moore is wonderful as Arthur Bach, the alcoholic millionaire who finds love in the arms of Liza Minnelli. Maybe not a great film for all the family due to it's language anf general theme but a really good laugh for the older viewer. I really hope that they get around to releasing Arthur 2: On the Rocks region 2 as it is only avalible as Region 1 at the moment.
