5.0 out of 5 stars Cupcake magic explained!, 10 Jun 2004
I love cupcakes. They are easy to make and bake, delicious and can be dressed-up to look impressive; they are easy to carry around for picnics, or to take to the office for celebrating something...
Despite my bias, I didn't know what to expect from this book, since I read contrasting opinions about it. Publisher's Weekly seemed to like it, even if it admitted a good number of the recipes take fairly long to make. On the contrary, a couple of Amazon customers thought the book was too simple and uninspiring.

Well, I decided to let it tempt me, and I have to say I'm not disappointed at all. There is a nice and essential introduction on cupcake making and decorating, where you can find information on equipment, techniques and ingredients. This is followed by three basic cupcake recipes (white, yellow and chocolate buttermilk) and three basic frosting recipes (but they are not the only recipes you are going to find here).

Then there are the "projects", as the author calls them. They all look stunning, and the gorgeous pictures will just make you want to try at once! It is true that some of the recipes are a bit elaborate, like the beautiful Butterfly Cupcakes: chocolate buttermilk cupcakes decorated with sugar butterflies. The instructions are clear and easy to follow, especially because of the step-by-step pictures, but I suppose it takes hours to complete the project.

It must be said, though, that there are also many easier recipes, that have original twists nonetheless, like the Chocolate Cabernet Cupcakes, which are just decorated with a dollop of cream and chopped cherries. They really taste terrific! The wine just adds an undefinable new dimension to chocolate. Or the Winter Spice Cupcakes that are decorated with a stencilled icing sugar snowflake: nothing could be easier and yet nice to look at when displayed (and, of course, yummy for a gingerbread addict like me!)

I like the fact that recipes for chocolate modelling clay, fondant and royal icing are given, so that you are all ready to proceed, when you decide to invest some time, because I'm sure making those chocolate roses is not an easy task!
I also appreciated the chart to convert cake recipes into cupcakes recipes.

Well, I really like this book! If you are into cake decorating, it would make a nice addition to your library. I have to admit I only tried a couple of recipes (and they were great!), but I am planning to do a lot more! Happy Baking!

3.0 out of 5 stars time consuming, 15 April 2008
i second what the previous reviewer has said and will add that although the book does have some quickly decorated cakes, the majority are very time consuming and fiddly. The layout puts me off as you often have to turn back and refer to the basic recipes at the start, its a small point but i do wonder if it is one reason i have yet to make any of the cakes (several months on), despite many of them looking very appealing. I am an avid baker and cake decorator so this book was a disappointment to me.
