Product Description

Synopsis

One of the most memorable creative personalities of the Baroque age and arguably the most forcefully expressive and influential women painter in history, the Roman-born Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-1652/3) has become the central figure in the recovery of the history of art produced by women. Applying a rigorous methodology, this illustrated study with interpretive text and catalogue raisonne embeds Gentileschi's pictorially and emotionally compelling pictures within the actual sociocultural contexts in and for which they were created. The interpretive text analyzes key pictures and primary literary evidence to reveal the sweep of Artemisia's oeuvre, chart her travels, define her standing with artists and patrons of the period, investigate the links between her financial situations and the artistic decisions that she made, and assess the validity of proposals regarding her activity as a still-life painter, her access to professional organizations, her level of literacy and the nature of her subject matter.

Many of the conclusions in the text are supported by a register of archival documents and by the very core of the study: a catalogue raisonne of Artemisia's autograph works, each of the 57 pictures investigated as to basic factual information, condition and colour, iconography, history, documentation and dating, existing copies, and bibliography. Catalogues of misattributed and lost paintings complete this comprehensive volume.

I saw the pre published text and met with the author. Here is a fully comprehensive, wonderfully detailed, and beautifully created book that clearly reflects an exacting 'lifetime labor of love' from Ward Bissell. I heartily recommend this book to all scholars, educators, students, collectors, dealers and appreciators of art in general and Artemisia in particular. Bissell has given us the definitive word on Artemesia Gentileschi with his work.

Bissell's book is best read in tandem with Garrard's book. 14 Oct 1999

I plan to use both the Bissell and the Garrard book on Artemisia Gentileschi in my Baroque Art History class this Spring. Since these authors often interpret both works and life events rather differently, students should find the comparison stimulating.

Book Nitty-Gritty 30 Oct 2011
By Theseus - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Other reviewers have commented on the authority of breadth of Bissell's work here. This review comments on the book itself.

A quality piece of work from The Pennsylvania State University Press: hardback, cloth over boards with a sturdy sewn binding. In dustjacket. 446 pp of creamy stock, followed by over 200 (mostly) full-page plates, largely in b&w. 5 pounds!

4 Appendices, about 20 pp of End Notes, and a 10 p Bibliography. Indexed.

The organization here is essentially 130 pp of biographical and aestethetic text followed by a superb Catalogue Raisonne.
