Amazon Review

It's remarkable how quickly the interest in colourful naval adventure has grown in recent years. Foremost among able practitioners is Julian Stockwin and his new book, Artemis, builds on the solid achievements of the much-acclaimed Kydd; here again is the same flinty characterisation, stunning narrative skills and (most of all) considerable imaginative skill in evoking the wind-lashed atmosphere of the best nautical novels: full of sharp detail and keenly evoked atmosphere.

It's the great age of fighting sail, when the seven seas are stalking grounds for prey and prize money. Aboard the crack frigate HMS Artemis, life can be invigorating--and short. Now a fully fledged Jack Tar, Stockwin's doughty hero Kydd returns to Portsmouth and a hero's welcome after cutting a bloody swathe through French ships. But urgent family matters force him to return to Guildford where he finds himself less able to cope than he was at sea. Soon, land-bound life is chafing him, and Kydd is happily back on the Artemis setting out for the Far East, and encounters with some lethal opponents. After a grim encounter with slavers, Kydd finds himself facing his own mortality in the waters of the Great Southern Ocean. Stockwin's particular ability (among so many) is his fastidious evocation of life aboard a sailing ship and the tensions that exist between the men locked into this dangerous life. The dialogue may take a little getting used to, but it's quickly apparent that this is one of the author's key strengths: this, you feel, is how these men really spoke. Most of all, though, it's the exhilarating recreation of the sailing life and its attendant dangers that keeps the reader transfixed.--Barry Forshaw --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review

Praise for KYDD: '...an innovative and accomplished fresh talent in the field, with a complex and richly drawn hero at the centre of an intelligently-structured narrative.' (Amazon.co.uk )

'The vantage point of the common sailor gives the nautical novel a fresh twist. In Stockwin's hands the sea story will continue to entrance readers across the world.' (Guardian )

'Stockwin paints a vivid picture of life aboard the mighty ship-of-the-line...the harsh naval discipline, the rancid food, and the skill of the common sailor are all skilfully evoked.' (Daily Express )

'Gripping...rich in action and full of interesting characters, this thrilling novel leaves you in awe of the 18th century seaman.' (Peterborough Evening Telegraph )

4.0 out of 5 stars Sharpe on the High Seas 28 July 2011
By Parm TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
The second book in a long running series this title has made many improvements on the debut title issues, the characters have grown, and gone is the innocence to the plot a new origionality pervades the whole story and leaves the reader with a shanty lilt to their speech and a roll to their gait.

Having read the rest of the series and read the rest of the reviews i can tell others that Julian did learn and progress the characters even further, and when that was coupled with his obvious passion for the sea and all things nautical, you end up with a series that does rank up there with Forrester and O'Brian, every year i look forward to my new instalment of Kydd...but to get there you have to start at the beginning.

Well recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars Artemis - a Great Follow up to Kydd 13 July 2006
Format:Paperback
I have just finished both Kydd and Artemis. I found out about the books from my son, who was going to buy me one of the later ones as he knows I love naval history fiction. I asked him to get me the first, though, so I could "start at the beginning".

Well, what a start - I have found both books entralling. Their technical detail is excellent along with very plausible story lines. As another reviewer alluded - the technical jargon can be quite daunting but then , how would it have been to a young pressed landman ..... ????? It helps to let the reader understand what Kydd must have felt like, and we can "learn" with him.

Artemis continues to build on a very strong start and develops more of the (expected future) relationship between Kydd and the enigmatic Renzi - a fascinating "coupling".

The next three books are now at home ready to be taken up. Having a break, though, with the other end of the naval spectrum, a techno-thriller by Patrick Robinson.

I look forward to returning to the 18th century thereafter.

Thanks Julian - stay bent to the task and keep 'em coming !!!

PS Thanks also to Con Campbell at julianstockwin.com who managed to get me a copy of Artemis for my holiday when I could not find one in the shops - great website as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just gets better 9 Feb 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Echoes of the relationship between O'Brian's Aubrey and Maturin are difficult to ignore when reading of Kydd and Renzi. There is tension, hostility, even open dislike at times - the inevitable result of two such disparate men thrown together in trying circumstances. But the genuine friendship, the acceptance of each other, warts and all transcends all their trials. I surprised myself by enjoying "KYDD" but this book I simply could not put down. If the trend continues then, with any luck, I will be completely lost in Mr Stockwin's next offering.

5.0 out of 5 stars It gets better! 6 July 2010
Format:Paperback
Book two in the series after Kydd and the pace is getting even better.

The series plot is developing, Kydd is developing and all is interwoven around lots of action and twists. You think you have an idea where the likely story is going, but Stockwin clearly delights in throwing in bits to keep you guessing.

This is the book that hooked me on the series and leaves me baffled that I haven't come across them before. Do you love the feeling of knowing you've got a whole line of fantastic reads ahead of you, seeing how the main characters develop? Well you've got it with these novels.

Format:Hardcover
Julian Stockwin's Artemis raises the promise of Thomas Paine Kydd's adventures 'tween decks in Nelson's navy to new heights in this sequel to Kydd. Stockwin's love of the sea and things naval is evident throughout, as is his sensitivity for the lot of the common seaman, which he vividly describes through the growing bond between Kydd and his particular friend Nicholas Renzi, each gaining knowledge and strength from the other. Salt spray and the aroma of tarred rigging and powder smoke fly off the pages like blown spume in a freshening breeze, leaving one longing for Seaflower - the next title in the Kydd saga - as the final pages of Artemis are turned. While it is tempting to compare Stockwin with other authors in the genre, it is simply enough to say that he stands alone, with his own unique voice and passion for Jack Tars, and their lives at sea and ashore.

4.0 out of 5 stars As intoxicating as a sea-breeze! 22 April 2002
Format:Hardcover
Not in the style of Kent, Forester, or anyone else really. Stockwin, has taken his own first hand experience of the sea and the Royal Navy and blended it with his longing for the wooden ships and iron men of the Royal Navy during the 18th Century.
He sidesteps the obvious battles and personal conflicts aboard ship (no weavels in the buscuits in one scene!), to draw together what it was like below decks as well as the officer class.
Stockwin uses the language - as much as possible - of the ordinary sailor and the reader is suddenly intoxicated with the language, sea-salt and gunsmoke.
Stockwin's second novel is even better than the first, and one must be encouraged to read the adventures of Kydd as the series unfolds.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pure naval escapism 27 Jan 2010
By J. Cooper TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is the second book in the Thomas Kydd series and it is superb!

The book contains everything you could possibly want of a maritime adventure story. The book opens with a gruelling sea battle which sees the Artemis and her crew return to England in glory. Kydd travels to India, then China and encounters many war-like Pacific islanders on the way home. The book ends with a court-martial which sees Kydd's future cast into doubt.

This book has a similar feel to Patrick O Brian's `Master and Commander' in the sense that any action is interspersed throughout the book in a fairly fluid manner. Action scenes are surrounded by subtle descriptions of sea-life, scenery and the men's shoreline exploits. I found this enhanced my enjoyment of the book as I was unable to predict when the next action sequence would take place; as can be done with other `formulaic books'.

I have given this very good book four stars, why did it lose the fifth?

Well, it's down to the slang that is written as would be spoken by the sailors of the day. I can appreciate that it does add authenticity to the book and helps the reader realise that this is a book which follows the lives of the common sailor instead of the upper-crust officer classes. However, I personally found this writing technique hindered my progress and comprehension at frequent intervals. I found I had to re-read particular sentences in order to fully grasp the intended meaning and tone. This problem was quite profound initially, but became less troublesome as I made my way through the book and familiarised myself with the different characters.
