Product Description

Review

Tim Hauser's The Art of Wall-E (Chronicle) provides a mesmerizing behind-the-scenes look at the movie's origin and creation, lushly illustrated with reproductions of concept art (storyboards, character sketches, and full-color pastels, and more) accompanied by production crew quotes. The coherent text traces the importance of visual storytelling in the film, which has very little dialogue, touching on silent movie comedians, pantomime acting, and the creative freedom of animation. This handsome volume will appeal to teens interested in the history of cinema, movie production, and animation, and would make an intriguing addition to classroom studies in these areas. This book carried a much darker tone due to the environment -- Earth with tons of trash. The colour palette from the movie was limited to very dark tones. This book isn't as colourful compared to other Pixar art books as a result. But that is not a bad thing.

There are a few pages right up front on visual storytelling. It provides a nice introduction into the conceptualizing of the movie, and into producing a movie where the main characters have with no dialogue.

In the first chapter "Cinematic Dictation", it talks about how storyboards helps make the movie. Included in this chapter are lots of storyboards in different styles by different artists.

"Trash Planet" is the name of the second chapter. It also happens to be the same name for the movie for more than ten years before it was changed to WALL-E. Here we have sketches, paintings and colorscripts for the trash filled environment WALL-E was set in. There are also character designs for WALL-E and EVE. It's amazing to look at these paintings and see how they have evolved into actual movie scenes.

The last chapter is called "The Axiom". It contains concept art for the spaceship, robots, interiors. There are also discarded ideas such as using alien blobs instead of humans.

Missing from this book are pastel drawings, the common ingredient found in Pixar art books. Ralph Eggleston, production designer for Finding Nemo, changed to a different style!

This is another marvelous art book for any Pixar fan.

Ever since I was a kid, I'd buy an animation art book almost yearly. The Art of The Lion King was probably the first art book of this type I ever had given to me and it kindled my love of animation art all the more, finally in these pages were beautiful concept illustrations, story board art works, inspirational paintings and final prints from the film, all of which were bound up in beautifully presented cloth covered large scale folio editions (originally printed by Hyperion). Books like these emphasised the storytelling process the Disney studios believed in and presented imagery which spoke volumes above the text, since the key to all great artistic works be it in animation, illustration, theatre design or film is the artists ability to simply draw from life, observe it, relish it and understand it -- and from that process you have great storytelling, you need imagination naturally and that's the art part, how you see marks you out ........... these books just need to show us more art when the film was evolving as that is inspirational and they could be designed better.

This is a fine book but doesn't really live up to my expectations when compared to what came before. It is smaller, I can't see the point in printing images which are the size of postage stamps on these pages and I want to see more final, well chosen film prints and pencil, painterly, illustrations than these digital smooth works which lack texture. The Monsters Inc. art book is a better example of Pixars ability to portray wonderful characters and displays more traditional means of creating concept illustrations for these films.

This book is a well constructed piece of a time line history of the creation of Wall-E it offers sketches from the ground up showing the artist's techniques in a lot of cases. With myself having a standard understanding of how to draw it is very useful in seeing what the professionals do and trying to recreate their style or add more flair to my own. A great book PACKED full of images.

A great "coffee table" book! That's if you're not embarrassed about letting your friends know you have a special place in your heart for Pixar...

The book is very pretty, made up from a range of drawings in different media, but there was a lack of design evolution shown. Majority of the book is a storyboard, changing in styles throughout. Personally, I wanted to see the evolution and previous designs of characters, and how they came to the final designs. Introducing concepts of the jello characters were interesting to see, a lost gem in the film that most might not ever see.
Overall is it still a nice book that all ages can enjoy.

Just a quick review to say that, as I am a great admirer of Wall-E, I also appreciate this book, that makes me feel the genesis of the film and of the characters.
Moreover, the book is really a pleasure to browse, with lots of pictures and notes even for a casual reading!
