The joy one feels when hearing the pealing of bells is something that Brad Mehldau brings to his interpretation of jazzstandards on THE ART OF THE TRIO, VOL. 2. The forms of these tunes yield to the pianist's pan-diatonic intervallic ideas and bending of phrase lengths, springing back occasionallyas the trio revisits the original melody, if only to gatherenergy for another leap away. Drummer Jorge Rossy adds an angular, Paul Motian-like rhythmic framework. On "The Way YouLook Tonight", the trio constantly switches in and out of double time, sounding as if they are running in and out of a burning fire. The most direct interpretation is of Mercer/Mancini's "Moon River", in which Mehldau seems to hear the other melodic possibilities not chosen by the composer and states these simultaneously with the original melody.

Let me say that I love everything Mehldau has put out with the exceptions of Largo, Elegiac Cycle, and the Art of the Trio Volume.1 - which I merely like a lot.

To my ears, Volume 2 is quite an improvement over Volume 1 if only because you actually hear him playing jazz live in a club to an audience and not in a sterile studio setting. This gives the trio a chance to really stretch and Mehldau especially lets loose in his solos. If you prefer just to hear him play beautiful tunes and his now idiosyncratic licks in short doses, then go for Volume 3 which has the best mix of songs that he has so far come up with. If you like jazz more for what goes on between the melodies, improvisation and interaction, however, then you might as well start here and just be amazed at the independence of his hands and the good effect to which he uses that, the impressive unaccompanied solo on Countdown and very nicely played ballad, Moon River, to show that he's not all frills.

I would also recommend this over Volume 4 as I think that it's quite rewarding to hear him tackle standards and how he makes those well-worn melodies personal and also because the playing and the arrangements, overall, are more consistently adventurous in Volume 2.

In any case, Mehldau is an impressive musician and Volumes 2-5 all feature impressive and moving music making by this highly able and interacting trio.
