Book Description

14 Sep 2009
Tattoos and tattoo culture have gone mainstream in the last few years, with popular TV shows such as LA Ink, Miami Ink and London Ink making celebrities out of tattooists and their clients. Highly skilled artists, many tattooists have moved beyond the artwork they draw on skin to create personal work on canvas. Art by Tattooists is the first book to showcase this art. The book features thirty international artists who use a variety of mediums, from ink, watercolour, acrylic paint and oil to lino printing, painting on wood and board, and even examples of tattoo-style street art and skateboard graphics. Many of the artists are heavily influenced by the imagery they use as tattooists roses, hearts, skulls, scrolls, birds, pin-ups, etc. and carry this into their personal work. Other work features colours, themes or subject matter that is more subtly related to tattoo styles. Given the current popularity of all things tattoo-related, the book will have a wide appeal, not only to anyone interested in tattoo art and culture but also to artists, illustrators, designers and students.

nice book. this is not really about tattoo designs so don't buy this if you are looking for tattoo work or pictures. it is alternative art by actual tattoo artists and i enjoyed it. some nice stuff. worth the money

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT 19 Feb 2011
I enjoy drawing and getting tattoos and it's brilliant to see another side to tattoo artists. I love the book and the range of styles by artists. It's great to see them work in different mediums

5.0 out of 5 stars Diamond in the rough. 20 Feb 2012
Art by Tattooists is by far one of the best tattoo books I have found on Amazon and trust me I have bought a lot. I spent a lot of time researching a book before, wading through all the garbage but with this one I just went for it and was absolutely astonished with what came through my door the following day. A very sturdy and decent sized booked. The book features work from tattooing superstar Guy Aitchison from Hyperspace Studios as well as some of my favourites Angelique Houtkamp from Salon Serpent and Derek Noble from Lucky Devel. This book has art from all ends of the spectrum. Dark. Bio-organic. Traditional. But everything meets in the middle thanks to tattoo culture.

A pure bargain, a must have for all.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fine art cultural experience 29 Oct 2011
By Dr. Delvis Memphistopheles TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A far cry from indian ink and compass of yesteryear adolescence, these are canvas art master transfered to the skin by people who have looked back to the artistry of Japan and then reworked the style using a European sensibility although most of the artists here are based in the USA. If you are looking to get inked, and it is for life, even if you later get lasered read this book first. It will save you a lifetime of regret. A little bit of forethought and money will bring you to these Anglo artists based across the UK or you could travel to Holland or Barcelona

There are a number of UK artists in Brighton, Kidderminster, Worcester, Birmingham, Nottingham and Stafford. This takes the needled to another sense of artistry and would make the whole experience of getting a tattoo something that you wore for life rather than reflecting the blip of a youth cult or an infatuation.

A fine art collection.
