Product Description

In recent years the sneaker scene has exploded with limited editions and artist/designer collaborations. These specialist shoes are invariably produced as short runs, using innovative or luxury materials and often have bespoke packaging. Art & Sole is the first book to focus exclusively on contemporary, cutting-edge sneaker design. It sets out to explore and to celebrate the creative side of sneaker culture, showing the best and most original rarities/collaborations and previewing the latest art and design. These are the shoes at the sharp end of sneaker culture not shoes that can be found in your average sports shop. The book also highlights how creative advances on the scene have been furthered by a growing number of artists who base their work on sneakers - from sculptures made from dissected shoes, to oil paintings on canvas, and even the customization of the shoes themselves. There is now a huge crossover between sneakerculture and the worlds of art and design.

Format:Paperback
As a part time trainer customiser and full time trainer addict I have just about every book on the subject, and I can tell you this is one of the best.

Depending, that is (as one of the other reviewers on here points out), on what you want. This book, as the title suggests, is a book that looks at the trainer as art. It showcases the classic designs, Ltd edition collaborations, unique customisations and - perhaps most interesting of all - other works inspired by sneakers and trainer culture. From Onitsuka Tigers 'Electric wonderland' advertising piece to furniture designed to look like a Nike Air bubble, it's all here in these pages.

If you want a book that showcases trainers and classic trainer design I'd look elsewhere and - try this: Sneakers: The Complete Collectors' Guide, but if you're a designer or artist of any sort - or simply a trainer-head who appreciates kicks for the wonderful works of art they can sometimes be, then this is the book for you.

The books is well researched and well put together. The cover is of a good quality stock, with the shoe design slightly raised or embossed if you like; and the 'Art & Sole' title come in the form of a stuck on sticker - which is a cool, urban, modern stylised look that overall, mirrors everything you'll find inside. It's a big book and it certainly doesn't skimp on content - I myself (as someone who consider himself to know a bit about the subject) was amazed at how much new material I came across in this book that I'd never seen before.

I actually have 2 copies of this book - one I keep at work and my art director (I work in advertising) is often coming in and taking it off the shelf for a flick through. The pages and pictures are top quality and there's plenty in there to get creative juices flowing if you need a little inspiration.

You don't have to be into trainers to appreciate - or even love this book. Anyone with an interest in art or design will lap it up and I'm sure most people will find it interesting. Probably the best book on trainers/sneakers/kicks or whatever you want to call them that I own, and I own quite a few. If you're even on this page and looking at books like this, considering buying it, you must be here fro a reason; and on that basis I can honestly say buy this book as you won't be disappointed in what it has to offer.

10/10 - the coolest coffee table book there is. Everyone who picks it up will comment and enjoy it.

If you found this review helpful please give it the thumbs up, and if not - comment and let me know why, so I can do a better job for you next time. Thanks :-)

Art and Sole 5 Aug 2009
By MHS
Format:Paperback
There's not much about Art and Sole I can tell you that you won't read for yourself in the product review, but here's my take on it.

I, as a huge sneaker obsessor, was looking for a book about this kinda thing, and Art and Sole seemed the best out there. I'd read an interview with the writer, and thought i'd give it ago, and although I wasn't disappointed, I was far from overwhelmed.

The books split into two sections, Sneakers and Art. The first section is packed with endless pages filled with pictures of collaborations, and rare special editions, but with barely a paragraph of explanation or information. The second section is filled with art exhibitions, and other ideas inspired by sneakers as art work - very nicely done.

In terms of the finish of the book, and the quality of it - 5 out of 5. The pictures are high quality, and the pages have a nice feel to.

I however was looking for a book which included more about the history of all the various brands mentioned, and would give a much more in-depth look into a trainers history and didn't just look solely collaborations.

The book doesn't do as much as I wanted it to, but what it does do, it does very well.

if like me, you love your trainers then this book is brilliant! packed with amazing designs and gorgeous trainers. it also has a little about the artist of the design or why that particular shoe was made, so it also has a little bit of info as well. overall brilliant book!
