Product Description

Four of the most influential and provocative art historians of our time come together to provide a comprehensive history of art in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Adopting a year-by-year approach, the present more than one hundred (c.3,000 words) essays, each focusing on a crucial event such as the creation of a seminal work, the publication of an artistic manifesto, or the opening of a major exhibition to tell the story of the period from 1900 to the present. All the key turning points and breakthroughs of modernism and postmodernism are explored in depth, as are the frequent and sustained antimodernist reactions that proposed alternative visions of art and the world. Two roundtable discussions one at mid-century, the other at the close of the book consider some of the questions raised by the preceding decades and look ahead to the art of the future.

4.0 out of 5 stars A wealth of information on a complex artistic time period, 23 Feb 2011
By

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
This review is from: Art Since 1900: Modernism, Antimodernism and Postmodernism (Hardcover)
This massive volume has for ambition to cover in a single survey the entire artistic creativity that has developed in the Western world since 1900. This is a task the book fulfills rather convincingly considering the complexity and diversity of the material under scrutiny.

The organization of the content is overall chronological, although there are also crossways to browse the books in a different mode than just with following the chronological development.

The book offers a valuable balance between facts and analytical moments which enable the reader to make sense of the factual data.

This should be a book of interest to both amateurs and connoisseurs alike. Both a great study and coffee table book with abundant illustrations throughout.

4.0 out of 5 stars encyclopedia of 20th century art, 12 Dec 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: Art Since 1900: Modernism, Antimodernism and Postmodernism (Hardcover)
An encyclopedia of 20th century art, well presented with good reproductions. Arranged chronologically with chapters covering 10 year spans which are sub- divided to include
major events or movements within the decade. Gently touches on inter-disciplinary comparisons. Ideal for the keen enthusiast in need of background.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great reference book on contemporary art, 19 Nov 2011

This review is from: Art Since 1900: Modernism, Antimodernism and Postmodernism (Hardcover)
This book is a great reference book on modern and contemporary art. Written by key art critics and historians (some of them probably the most influential of 60s on), it provides the basics for a research in art (extensive bibliography) and an enjoyable reading.
