Book Description

1 Mar 2010 0500238685 978-0500238684
Art + Science Now is a groundbreaking overview of the art being made at the cutting edge of scientific research. The first illustrated book in its field, it shows how some of the worlds most dynamic art is being produced not in museums, galleries and studios but in the laboratory, where artists probe cultural, philosophical and social questions connected with scientific and technological advances. Featuring the work of around 250 artists from the UK, Germany, France, the Netherlands, the USA, Japan and elsewhere, it presents a broad range of projects, from body art to bioengineering of plants and insects, from music, dance and computer-controlled video performances to large-scale visual and sound installations. This comprehensive guide to contemporary art inspired or driven by scientific innovation points to intriguing new directions for the visual arts and traces a key strand in 21st-century aesthetics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Da Vinci would have loved it 12 April 2010
Format:Hardcover
This is an extremely welcome and perhaps well overdue survey of the current state of art that takes inspiration from developments science and technology. Stephen Wilson really knows his stuff and has picked an excellent representative cross-section to look at - and they are all well-illustrated throughout, with each section introduced insightfully by Wilson. Though it offers no real depth of coverage to any artist in particular - which is inevitably the nature of an overview - it really gives you some great starting points, as I know enough about some of the artists mentioned in this book to be sure that any further enquiries into any of them will give you far more to consider and enjoy. He also includes a great list of links at the back that helps with this.

I personally have no doubt that we are witnessing a massive shift in the whole idea of art, expression and identity in our culture, and that this is only the beginning of something that will go on and on developing. So it's great to see it brought together by someone who actually knows what they are talking about - and the fact that none of us know where it's heading is all part of the fun.

One warning though - that this book may confuse and irritate those that see art purely as a traditional painting or sculpture. It's not for you, unfortunately, unless you can open your mind.

Highly recommended - Da Vinci would have loved it.

Brilliant, comprehensive resource. The layout of the pages is very engaging, a very good balance of photos and text, and the text is efficient and not waffling, which is something rare in art books today, there is either no writing to give proper information on concepts or intentions behind a piece or pages of analysis that doesn't actually say anything . An UNBEATABLE overview of this specific area of art.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice pictures 14 Aug 2010

Nice pictures, and it has a good breadth of work, but it's disasterously short on critical writing about the pieces-- little more than a single-sentence mention of the piece. If you're looking to see how many different artists work in a given style, it's OK. If you're looking for critical thought, it's going to leave you empty handed.
