An interesting and wide ranging book. But possibly too wide.,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Art and Science of Fencing (Paperback)
This book has a good range of ideas and views on fencing, but possibly it's more about the authors view and opinions on fencing, rather than how to fence... He has very strong views on some things ie: Anatomical grips. And occasionally starts a Page of the book, whithout actually finishing it.

Opinionated and reactionary, if well-written,

This review is from: The Art and Science of Fencing (Paperback)
Nick Evangelista has an incisive writing style which is this book's major selling point. It's an enjoyable read, and you feel you've got to know the author quite well by the end.Unfortunately, this is an opinionated and reactionary book which has less to offer the competitive fencer than most of the other books on the market. Evangelista doesn't like the way fencing has developed into the modern sport, and he's not afraid of saying where he thinks it has gone wrong. He may, of course, be right - but, then, so may the people who disagree with the off-side rule in football. The fact is, that modern fencing is what it is and the clock cannot be turned back, the genie cannot be put back in the bottle, and the old days won't come round again. If you're a confident, competitive fencer, I think you will enjoy this book, as long as you are able to keep in mind the difference between the way things are and the way Evangelista thinks they should be. On the other hand, if you are a beginner or a novice, I would advise you to steer clear of it. You can't learn to fence from a book - you need to be in a club, getting training from a coach. Let your coach's opinions shape you in the crucial early months and years - they will, at the very least, be up to date with current rules and techniques.

An excellent book - a must reader for any fencer,

This review is from: The Art and Science of Fencing (Paperback)
An easy to read book written with the readers in mind, this book presents a great deal of information in a format that is enjoyable and educational to read. The author's views on many of the vices of the modern fencing world (i.e. pistol grips) is a refreshing bit of honesty and sensibility. I highly recommend this book to any begining fencer or seasoned veteran for a fresh look at one of the greatest arts known to man.
