Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

In the De La Soul diet, AOI: Bionix is a solid hip hop meal--no fancy turntablism and few fluffy comedy sketches, just down home beats and rhymes served straight up. Bionix is a mellow, intelligent album that aims to educate and get a laid-back party groove on at the same time. "Baby Phat" is a note to all the ladies that those couple of extra pounds only means there's more of them to love, and "Held Down" takes on a new, post September 11 angle with the lyrics "And when I'm watching the news / And my daughter walk in / To choose to ask / 'Why were all the people on the floor, sleeping, covered in red' / I told her, 'They came lookin' for God but found religion instead'. " Of course De La Soul aren't comfortable preaching for too long, and at the other end of the spectrum lie sex and drug duds like "Pawn Star" (featuring Shell Council) and "Peer Pressure" (featuring Cypress Hill's B-Real) that flog their subject matter dead. Even with a couple of weak offerings, though, Bionix is more at par than sub par. The album's mix of gospel, funk and hip-hop comes to a head on "Trying People," a soothing balm of a song about trying to make life a little less complicated. --Jennifer Maerz

Well, after following the magic number since 1989 every new De La Soul album is an event that I always look forward to. However, since 'Stakes Is High' I seem to go through the same routine. I listen to the new album once and think 'the've frikkin lost it this time, never again' but a month, a few months or a year later I think - 'no, can't have been that bad'. I play the album again and think 'why the hell did I hate this?'. I have figured it out, De La remain ahead of the Hip Hop game, every time, guarenteed.

This album, AOI:Bionix is a supurb piece of finely crafted, smokey basline, slick produced hip hop. A real antidote to the (fantastic) Eminem Show.

So what's in this album that makes it good? Well, you've got the emotional, grown up beats of 'held down', 'Special' and 'Trying People'. An amazing appearance from Cypress Hill on 'Peer Pressure', which turns the hold dope smokin' lyrical content on it's head. Then there are the initially dubious traks like 'Simply' and 'Bionix' that do not seem to fit, until you realise that it is old skool De La, having a laugh and using the most unusual samples to date - Paul McCartney's 'Havin' a Wonderful Xmas Time' for f' sake - and after a few listens it sounds great.

My recommendation, buy this, hate it then return older and wiser in a few months...Like I did. A great Album!

The third in a string of BLINDING albums from De La will no doubt get swept under the carpet by the media - just like "Stakes is High" and last years' "Mosaic Thump". Soulful, introspective, musically audacious, lyrically thought-provoking. Only let down in the last quarter by a couple of dubious porno-rap tunes (pastiches?), but redeems itself with the album closer "Trying People". Up there with Root Manuva's "Run come save me", when will people realise that the DE LA story didn't end with "3ft High and Rising"? Roll on "Art Official Intelligence part 3".

This trio have alerted our ears with pure eminence once again, after their previous albums I was unsure if I should anticipate the arrival of another classic from the intriguing, heavy breathing team. The new album has proved my wait worthwhile, in a genre of highly respected music they have distinctly marked their teritory as a jar of the best chocolate spread which never runs out.
