4.0 out of 5 stars good intro book into the murky depths of contemporary art, 23 Mar 2010
This review is from: Art Now (Icons Series) (Paperback)
i bought my copy back when first printed in 2001 as a further toe dip into the contemporary art world as was absorbing the Ldn artscene at the time. this book has proved to be an excellent taster of the up + coming as well as established artists regarded (then) as "now". the book IS compact(6"w x 8" high),but the images are high quality and have not faded to date. artist summaries are necessarily brief and occasionally a little obtuse as written by various Taschen art contributors, but mostly informative although the Glossary is badly laid out in a continous text format, not good. this was much improved in Art Now 2 hardback version.

many of the 87 featured artists were already established (although Hirst is curiously not here - too popular perhaps?, politics?) while Emin, Lucas,Gursky, Tillmans, Kruger et al are here, as is Koons, so go figure why not Damien. this little book served me well over the years and is very good as eye candy, as much as mind and culture candy, and good for yr shelf for reference. the Taschen "Artnow 2" is bigger, better and printed in 2008- gives an updated overview than here, with important "new" 81 artists (although many are repeated approx.2/3 rds from the earlier version) added with bigger images but less artist information so you takes your choice people. Taschen's "Art of the 20th Century" from 2000 is a far more detailed + near definitive choice for those wanting a detailed overview , with many nearly forgotten but influential artists in addition to the established names.

anyway, Art Now is still a v.good budget choice for artists and culture lovers alike for a good overview of art produced mainly in the 1990's.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great small book on contemporary art!, 24 Mar 2003

This review is from: Art Now (Icons Series) (Paperback)
This truly is a great book on contemporary art! I liked it a lot.
In this small edition, only about 190 pages, you get a lot of information about actual art and artist. The stil of the book is a beautiful combination of images and short but interesting texts. Also many important and international representives of contemporary art are shown. I recommend this book especially to people who want to get a first insight to contempory art.

My only wish is that I had a practical use for more than one of these things every year! This is the only non-digital diary/notebook/calendar I own and I love it!

2.0 out of 5 stars To the Bonfires!, 30 April 2009
By Helpful consumer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Art Now (Icons Series) (Paperback)
Art for art teachers and students that what to become art teacher.WE only has to look through a book like this to realize how incomprehensible modern art has become.Eat and defecate in your own kitchen. I bought this book hoping to get an insight into what is going on in the west as ideas or feelings represented by symbolism. This University art tell nothing except doubt and decadence.
This art is symptomatic of the left wing psychology. No stoicism here. You must not resist in your apology. There cousins in politics (& there media controllers) are still using the police state to close down any debate that is not politically correct.Back to the USSR.Only the victim is sacrosanct but who deems the victim?!!Basically more post modernist h.s. .To the bonfires!
2 stars for those who try.
