The Art of the Nasty explains and conveys the media furore, the fear and the rush for political legislation that greeted the arrival of uncensored horror films on video in the UK. The hysteria was generated and fuelled as much by the sleeves and marketing as by the films themselves. In fact, many of the biggest critics of the 'nasties' only ever saw the sleeves. Some of the early video sleeves are indeed an unbelievably bold and over-the-top mixture of outrageous graphics and in-your-face visual shock tactics, guaranteed to offend. Banned by an Act of Parliament after a frenzied and hysterical press campaign, the video nasty was deemed at the time to be a threat to society as we know it, even being implicated by career politicians and journalists as a catalyst for murder. The Art of the Nasty reproduces 450 pre-certificate video covers in all their lurid glory, from the ludicrous and extreme imagery of SS Experiment Camp and the gross savagery of Cannibal Holocaust to the powerful, confrontational image of a rape victim used to promote I Spit on Your Grave. Covering the whole gamut of pre-certificate video sleeves, from the 'Official' 39 nasties which were found obscene by the Director of Public Prosecutions through to jaw-dropping sleaze epics like Killer Nun and Violation of the Bitch, The Art of the Nasty is an invaluable visual record of a time the mainstream video industry would like to forget. 2009 marks the 25th anniversary of the Video Recordings Act - the legislation passed by Parliament in order to 'crack down' on the sale of video nasties. This fact precipitated the decision by FAB Press to re-issue The Art of the Nasty at this time. Ironically, in June 2009 the BBFC passed the controversial film Antichrist uncut. There is no doubt that, had the film been released in 1984, it would have been banned outright, demonstrating yet again the way in which moral fashions shift with time. As well as reproducing the key art of the video nasty covers in full colour, and with comprehensive text describing the films and the subsequent censorship history of each title, the book puts the nasties into the political and social context of the 1980s, demonstrating how much the censorship landscape of Great Britain has changed over the course of 25 years.
About the Author
Nigel Wingrove is the founder of Salvation Films and the video labels Redemption, Jezebel and Purgatory. Wingrove began his career as a designer and art director before moving into film direction and distribution. He has consistently opposed the censorship of film intended for an adult audience, most notably with his short work Visions of Ecstasy, which has been banned in the UK on the grounds of blasphemy since 1990. FAB Press published Nigel's book Blood & Dishonour in 2008. Marc Morris is a renowned expert in the field of exploitation cinema, and has contribued to numerous specialist publications. Morris also runs DVD label Nucleus Films and the website The Cult Movie Forum. He is also the co-host of the lively video nasty internet resource, the Pre-Certification Video website. FAB Press published Marc's book Shock! Horror! in 2005.

This new updated edition of The Art of the Nasty starts with a foreword written by Nigel Wingrove in July 2009: the original intro from 1998 is also included. It's really interesting to read how the UK Censors have mellowed & because of less draconian rules many of these old films which were once banned can now be found without the fear of having one's collar felt by the `Bill' for possessing a forbidden video! The photos of all those old gems are beautifully laid out together with brief synopses & the authors don't eulogise everything - if a film was a bit rubbish they tell you! Very nostalgic to look back at long forgotten video companies with names such as Hikon, Go, Sapphire & Jaguar - wonder where those guys are now?!
Printed in solid hardback & published under license through good old Fab Press this is a book that no self respecting collector of `unusual' (!) movies should be without!

This review is for the later reprint released in 2009. Written by my mate Marc Morris with Nigel Wingrove, it is the definitive book about the UK pre-certification era and is a must for a series tape collector such as myself.
Hopefully this version has addressed the binding issue of the first edition. There are various sections including The Nasties and Nice and Sleazy plus good up to date write ups and reviews. An essential purchase.

What do you get when you buy "The Art of the Nasty"?A Visual depiction of a time when we could think for ourselves as well as censor our own tastes , a time when the faceless bureaucrats suddenly decided that we weren't adult or responsible enough to think for ourselves . Are any of these films or covers really that bad , did these films cause people to commit acts of violence and abuse ,I think not!! In a nutshell this book covers brief accounts of the '39 Official Nasties' as well as 34 more that were prosecuted by the DPP(failed to get convictions)as well as a couple of hundred choice covers from a bygone era Looking at this artwork one begs the questions "What do I prefer? , the bland , sterile artwork and covers from todays films or the visceral , in your face , sometimes naff sometimes brilliant covers of pre 1984 VRA films. If these films really do contain such shocking scenes then what is anyone under the age of 18 doing watching them in the first place. I have seen far worse scenes of violence and abuse watching the news on terrestrial TV, where is that censorship?? The Art of the Nasty -Those were the days my friend
