Product Description

Synopsis

This title contains a book and a CD-ROM. Artists looking to supplement a live model class or hone their skills from the comfort of home are provided with a solid pictorial guide to the human form in this detailed reference. Nearly 200 crisp photographs portray a diverse group of male and female models from a variety of angles in 52 classically inspired poses. Precise lighting reveals otherwise hidden areas of the models and illustrates rich shadowing and tone, while an anatomical study, inspired by da Vinci's "Vitruvian Man", presents detailed proportional references for each model. The accompanying CD-ROM contains nearly 1,500 high-resolution, full-colour images, allowing artists to zoom in on challenging areas such as the hands, feet, and face, or project the photos to life-size proportions. Nine poses with overhead views are also exclusively available on the CD-ROM.

Great resource for any photographer or art student looking for inspiration with their models. The disc is jam packed with royalty free images arranged in folders.

The models are posed on a turn table and then the photographer has captured an image every 10 to 20 degrees of rotation of the model. This makes about 24 images per model with some models photographed in greater detail or specific anatomical areas covered.

The disc also contains a low resolution PDF version of the book (later series contain high resolution PDF files) which I've copied to my tablet device for quick reference on shoots; I've already done a fine art shoot and drawn inspiration from the book. You can also download bonus models from the website with the code printed in the book.

This is the earliest of the series I have and owning 5 & 6 as well you can see a progressive improvement from the publishers and the models. Highly recommended in either the print & disc version OR the standalone disc version.

I use a computer to sculpt figures. So these books, or CDs are great. Would recommend them all.

What a difference 10 Oct. 2007
By Ian - Published on Amazon.com

I made the mistake of purchasing the first effort in this series and was so disappointed that I nearly gave this one a miss. Luckily I did not.

The images are exceptionally clear, they are of poses that are relevant to nude sculpture (largely), are not censored or smudged and are of exceptional clarity and high resolution - on the DVD.

Printed on an A3 printer, the sharpness and detail of the images are just plain brilliant. I now wait with anticipation for the next in the series. This kind of publication will never replace a live model, but when one is not available, they are certainly next best.

Make sure you get the CD as well as the book 26 Nov. 2007

This is an excellent resource for live model anatomy. In the CD you can turn the model around 360 degrees to get virtually any view. You can zoom into the photo and get perfect detail. Lighting is good as well. What a great find!

A thoroughly useful handbook 15 May 2007
By Angel Jones - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
There is much to praise in Art Models 2. The variety and the care with which models are shown from not only common but also interesting vantage points is especially helpful for students exploring foreshortening and the effects of deep space on the body, while the poses from masterworks provide even established artists with the chance to study the dynamics of a Michelangelo without traveling to Italy. Furthermore, the diversity of body types painstakingly presented is practically unheard of in collections of life nude photos for the artist despite the necessity for an understanding of just such diversity in the creation of realistic figural depictions.

The true benefit of this book over all others, however, is the companion disk. The expanded content is irreplaceable and goes beyond the more basic views established in the printed version to include images both from high- and low-vantages rather than the head-on eye level viewpoint that persists in most referential photography for artists' anatomy. I would commend the companion disk as a reference for any figurative artist. Bravo for a job well done!

Excellent Tool For Artists! 29 May 2008
By Randy M. Cain - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
This Book/CD combo is excellent. The interactive web site is also excellent, and greatly extends the book/CD. The poses in this package are from, "classic inspiration." This package is as close to having an actual model in your studio as you could ever hope to achieve. Using the photos on the CD has some advantages over a live model: you won't get slapped for getting too close.

The quality of the book is good. It is thin, hardbound, and lays flat. The pages are gloss stock and hold the ink well. The photos in the book are large enough to use from the book, but the primary purpose of the book is to index the photo sets on the CD. Only four angles of each pose are included in the book. The printed photos are somewhat darker than the photos on the CD. All of the photos on the CD are in standard JFIF (JPG) format, 400 - 600 MB each. The CD includes a copy of the book, with lower resolution photos, in Portable Document Format (PDF). The book includes a proportional reference grid for two of the models, for use by digital artists.

The photography is very good. The photos are sharp, high resolution, highly detailed, well lighted, from the standard 10 o'clock position. The lighting and detail is consistent throughout all of the camera angles. In one photo set, a strong shadow is cast to the model's right, which is somewhat distracting. The shadow doesn't diminish the detail clarity of the photos, however.

The photo sets of each pose on the CD, (24 photos each), are taken at 15 degree intervals, throughout 360 degrees. Kudos to the models for being able to hold some of those difficult poses so consistently! And kudos to the authors for choosing not to airbrush or blur any of these wonderful photographs.

The models are attractive, well groomed, relaxed, and comfortable. Only the elder gentleman has slightly imperfect extremities, consistent with his age.

A lot of thought and effort went into the creation of this package to make it as useful to an artist as possible, and it very well implemented. I am VERY impressed with this package!

Art Models 2 16 Feb. 2011
By Ida Kotyuk - Published on Amazon.com

Having worked with live models (both nude and clothed) for over thirty years, the Art Model series 2, 3, and 4 (along with its DVDs), which are the ones I recently own, are the best I have seen of its kind. The authors have bent over backwards to create a reference book on models for artists and I was pleased to find the following:

In Art Models 2, the authors focus on classically inspired poses and cite their reference (i.e., "The Implorer" Rodin, 1900, On Disk: mandy017; and "Torso with a Twist," A Red Ink study by Michelangelo, circa 1510 Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, On Disk: jim013. Etc.).

In Art Models 3 and 4, the authors: include props (invaluable when an artist has to be sensitive to and understand the dynamics of the slightest muscle shift and its effect on the fulcrum; one grid page and one non-grid page with the same pose (an important aid when something about the image just doesn't look right); 24 angles of the same pose for 360 degree views; and two-model poses which aids in spatial relationships.

The series serves exactly what the authors intended; that is, a reference to work from, independently creating (drawing, painting, sculpting) from the suggested poses in the books/CDs. My first choice will always be to work from a live model because cameras lie and distort by reinterpreting what our eyes see. Photographers reinterpret what the camera sees. And the inks necessary for printed publications, again, reinterpret the image tones. As an example, in terms of inches, our feet are larger than our heads. The camera doesn't see this and the feet look suspiciously too small; all the figures are imbued with a luscious warm body tone which in reality our shadow areas, at the turning point, shifts into a slightly cool range. To have everything in a warm tone tends to flatten the image. These are camera and printer's ink issues; but, this knowledge is important when planning to please a client.
