Synopsis

Whether you are a designer looking for tips, an artist seeking inspiration, or a passionate games enthusiast, you will find everything you need to know in this essential, illustrated guide to the creativity on display in games today. Characters featured hail from every game genre, including cute and cuddly creations such as Pac-man and Mario, through sexy, sassy heroines such as Lara croft and Dark Lineage's Lya, to brooding enigmas such as Jericho cross. Interviews with the game designers reveal their sources of inspiration, along with fascinating early designs that show exactly how they went about turning a bright idea into a classic character. Tips and techniques explain what makes a character grab the public's imagination, and provide practical ideas for the would-be game artist.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Art of Game Characters, 28 Jul 2006

The Synopsis states;
"Whether you are a designer looking for tips, an artist seeking inspiration, or a passionate games enthusiast, you will find everything you need to know" and I would totally agree with it. Falling into the game enthusiast role myself with also a interest in art and how things are created I found this book a enjoyable read.
People already familar with the games industry and have pervouis experince in design may have heard some of it before yet with interviews thoughout the book from different companies different views are presented meaning you have room to think of your own view on something rather then "this is how it should be done" being forced on you.
Most of the book is taken up with full-colour screenshots, concept art and other work from games themselves yet all are explained and stated where they are from, this means that full detail isn't gone into on subjects yet I feel it is enough not the baffle people and get them bored while still providing a good insight.
Many game characters are explained (some I didn't know yet it was still interesting) from different genres of games and explains why they look like they do, how costume is important, there design process and many other things.
This book in my option is for people with a casual interest or students wanting something interesting to read on the subject of games design. It offers no tuturiols or "how to make" guides yet every so often does state certain well known game engines and programs like photoshop.
