Product Description

Product Description

The design revolutions of the early 20th century created carpets of extraordinary vitality, and this pioneering work of scholarship places these dazzling examples of textile art at centre state during an exciting period in the history of decorative arts. The fruits of the flourishing Art Deco movement, not just in France but throughout Europe and the USA, form the first part of the book, while in the second, the focus turns to the reaction against the artistes-decorateurs by the champions of Modernism, and such influences as the Bauhaus, Cubism and collage. In 1927, the critic Rene Chavance identified carpet production as the most successful of the decorative arts in achieving 'the more visionary aims of the times'. Susan Day's exceptional book proves that these wonderful designer carpets still strike us today with their decorative power.

This is a useful design reference book for both deco and modernist carpets with plenty of colour illustrations. There are also some photographs of carpets in their original settings. There's quite a lot of text that I'm sure will be interesting if I ever get round to reading it. There are examples of signatures and monograms, invaluable for identifying any finds. The examples are of the high end / progressive styles of the time rather than the mass produced / suburban.

Covering new ground 5 Nov 2002
By Joel Weltman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I am biased, Moholy Nagy, Joseph Albers and Johannes Itten and their cohorts at the Bauhaus left an indelible mark on my artist's soul. When I saw this book I actually two-steppped a little jig for joy. The application of modernist patterns to this fiberous, color-satuating medium is in many ways a perfect example of the Weimar/Dessau ethos: " form will always follow function", is still a very pertinant, clear, and vibrant idelogy. The beautifully printed photos of the carpets are worth the price of the book, as they serve as excellent sources of inspiration and study. The book's design is well-thought out and allows the fabrics and weavings to come alive on the pages. It is a fortunate thing that younger talented, art historians like Ms. Day are allowing themselves and their readers the pleasure of rediscovering the wealth and elegance of Modernist ideas as a healing antiodote to our current age of mass art confusion.
