Product Description

Product Description

By the time of the great Paris Exhibition of 1925, the idea that an interior and its furnishings should form a complete design -- a "total look" -- dominated the thinking of both designers and their sophisticated clients. In the later 1920s and 1930s, whole studios were established, notably in France and the United States, to serve the needs of a design- and style-conscious middle class-intent on showing off its newly refined taste for things modern and exotic: the richly lacquered screen, the tubular steel chair, the vivid geometric carpet.

Art Deco Interiors documents this flourishing of design ingenuity in Europe and America. Using contemporary photographs and illustrations of interiors, juxtaposed with modern photographs of individual pieces, it traces the stylistic evolution and dominant motifs of Deco. Patricia Bayer illustrates the triumph of the 1925 exhibition and the establishment of the pure high style of the leading Paris ensembliers, and assesses the tremendous growth of jazzy, Streamline Moderne offshoots in the United States. Major chapters are devoted to large-scale designs for ocean liners, cinemas, theaters, offices, and hotels, and to the revival in the 1970s and 1980s of Deco as a decorative style. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This book contains an excellent array of photos of original and recreated art deco interiors covering many styles within the period. From grand public spaces to intimate domestic interiors it is an inspirational book for someone who may be interested in recreating the Art Deco look.

Beautiful book 8 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback
I bought this as a complete newcomer to the subject area and have found it a good read. Each section is covered in detailed text followed by plenty of drawings, photographs and prints.

My only criticism is that it is a bit heavy on just listing names of designers without giving any background of them, their styles or what they contributed to the genre. Feels a bit like you might be reading a 1930's 'Hello' magazine than an informed book.

Pretty enough as a starting point though.

Art Deco 19 Dec 2010
By Bransy
Format:Paperback
Being an Art Deco lover for a lot of years (guess what, I'm a wrinkly) I found this publication fascinating
and am still ploughing throuh it in easy stages, enjoying every minute. Not everyones's taste of course but
it gives the impression of quality which many of today's products don't. Sorry if this makes me sound like a
grumpy old man - I am. Only problem: it weighs about half a ton and is a bugger to read in bed...
