Book Description

12 Sep 2007 159102532X 978-1591025320 New Ed
This classic work on critical thinking - now fully updated and revised - uses a novel approach to teach the basics of informal logic. On the assumption that 'it takes one to know one', the authors have written the book from the point of view of someone who wishes to deceive, mislead, or manipulate others. Having mastered the art of deception, readers will then be able to detect the misuse or abuse of logic when they encounter it in others - whether in a heated political debate or while trying to evaluate the claims of a persuasive sales person. Using a host of real-world examples, the authors show you how to win an argument, defend a case, recognise a fallacy, see through deception, persuade a sceptic, and turn defeat into victory. Not only do they discuss the fundamentals of logic (premises, conclusions, syllogisms, common fallacies, etc.), but they also consider important related issues often encountered in face-to-face debates, such as gaining a sympathetic audience, responding to audience reaction, using non-verbal devices, clearly presenting the facts, refutation, and driving home a concluding argument. Whether you are preparing for law school or you just want to become more adept at making your points and analysing others' arguments, "The Art of Deception" will give you the intellectual tools to become a more effective thinker and speaker. Helpful exercises and discussion questions are also included in this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great approach; quite thourough as well. 29 Jan 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This is a great introduction to critical thinking and presents the logic very well, although some minor points take a few readings to fully understand. All around, though, it covers most every aspect of critical reasoning with a twisted approach that allows one to be totally objective. It could be better suited for the average reader and updated some, but it is still the best handbook for critical thinking.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to dirty tricks in arguement 11 Oct 1998
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Written from the point of how to get the upper hand through the use of dirty tricks. Has virtually all of them covered. Easy to read with lots of examples.

Very practical and useful material. Excellent use of examples to demonstrate concepts. The author uses mini transcripts with commentaries to make techniques (and common mistakes in argumentation) crystal clear. This is a must read if you have anyone in your life who likes to argue for argumentation sake.

4.0 out of 5 stars I found the book to be quite good. 16 Sep 1998
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I am reordering the book because a friend lost my copy. I found the book to be quite good. It succeeds in presenting logic and logically thinking in a unique and interesting manner. I was surprised to see the low ratings from your survey. I wonder if some people weren't expecting more of a manual on actually how to deceive others.

1.0 out of 5 stars I purchased the audio version 23 Mar 1998
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
The real deception is that some people think that anyone can hook up a microphone and record a seminar and people will flock to buy it. I produce training for a living and this has to be the most dry, poorly produced program I have ever heard. The subject matter can be interesting but the author sounds over technical, & his voice is monotone. The author exhibits no variants of emphasis, no vignettes or role play. In addition you also hear what we believe are children crying and dogs barking as well as page turning in the background. There are no intros or music or alternate voices. Just the author in his kitchen recording his theories for a journal. I was looking forward to receiving this tape and could not shut it off fast enough after the first 10 minutes. Sorry to be so critical but it is honest.

Not the author to write such a book. I felt somewhat taken advantage of -- given that my time is so valuable and was wasted --and I suggest you steer clear of this volume and search for the hundreds of other truly interesting and valuable books.
