4.0 out of 5 stars very concise, witty, readable but small., 4 April 2000
By
This review is from: Art: A Crash Course (Hardcover)
This is, in my view, a major contribution to the genre. Freeman has said 'be gone' to the stuffy, 'aurevoir' to the pretentious and a resounding 'enough!' to the exclusive. I am totally enamoured with the writing style. I am an art teacher and am grateful to the author for presenting me with a text that invites, excites and sustains interest in the visual arts. It's a novel but useful layout, a great gateway to the academic world of the visual arts and a good refresher course for people like me! I know it will have it's detractors calling it superficial. Well, those people need to remember how lucky they are to be in a position to realise how much deeper it all goes. Julian Freeman knows that this is just a beginning. Only two complaints...too small and many artists mentioned do not have pieces shown.

4.0 out of 5 stars Art - A Crash Course, 7 Jan 2000
By CHARLOTTE LEWIS - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Art: A Crash Course (Crash Course (Watson-Guptill)) (Hardcover)
The size is terrific. Easy to slip into a purse or pocket and carry through the museum. Fine reference for art one does not know. Clear and concise and intelligently written. Nice heavy slick paper with lovely colored illustrations. I'm buying books for two of my art pals to carry (also) when we go to the museums together.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read, 1 Nov 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Art: A Crash Course (Crash Course (Watson-Guptill)) (Hardcover)
This book is wonderful! It covers all the important artists and periods without being wordy. I knew next to nothing about art before I read this book; it gave me a great overview of the world of art. I can't wait to read the other books in this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great - does just what it says on the cover., 15 July 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com

Freeman's hectic (manic?) style is exactly right for this brisk tour of art through the ages. If you ever felt your feet turn to lead as you were moved round one of those great art galleries by a serious, informed, but oh-so-boring tour guide, then get all light and giddy again as Jules whisks you from Boudin to Basquiat with a song and a laugh...

Best of all (as far as I can tell) all the names, dates, picture attributions are RIGHT! So keep it on your bookshelf for the next time you forget whether it was Manet or Monet who did the waterlilies.
