5.0 out of 5 stars Sumptuous visual treat 3 Oct 2013
By Parka HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
Length: 1:23 Mins
This art book for Cloudy's sequel is just as good as the first art book.

This is a very well done companion art book to the movie Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2. It's hardcover with 144 pages. The front cover is actually a gatefold that when opened up shows a beautiful landscape painting of the Swallow Falls with the wonderful food creatures. On the back of that cover is a 3-page colour script, essentially the storyboard from start to the ending.

The book covers the characters and creature designs, and the production designs for the environment and props.

Every page is filled with wonderful art.

As most of the characters are featured in the earlier art book, the emphasis here is the commentary on how they have changed since we last saw them. The extra characters are Chester V, Barb, Thinkquanauts, Sentinels of Safety and the other Live Corp employees.

The creature designs are for the foodimals, the complex food-based organisms (or the mutant food-inspired creatures as I would call them) created by the Food Replicator. Those foodimal designs are great, whimsical and creative. There are lots of hilariously cute foodimals with funny names, such as Cheespider, Tacodile, Watermelophant, Shrimpanzees and more. Their designs are almost as wacky as those from The Croods except they are made of food here.

Environment art are beautiful too. There are San Franjose city, Live Corp and the evolved Swallow Falls. The colour palette and shapes look inspired by Mary Blair and Maurice Noble.

In addition to the art, a scratch-and-sniff stickers booklet is included. The moment you open it, you can smell something sweet. The stickers are of the adorable foodimals.

This book is a sumptuous visual treat. Recommended for fans of the film and art.

Alright, some technicalities to point out. There were two publishers for the first art book. It seems there are also two publishers for this book, namely Cameron + Company and Titan Books. I wanted to point this out because Titan Books left out some content in their version of the first book, namely the scent stick booklet and other stuff. I'm not sure if they did the same here as I only have the Cameron + Company version.

And from what I surmise, the Cameron + Company's published book is for the USA audience, and Titan Books is for the rest.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful, visually rich art book 13 July 2014
By Kazammo! - Published on Amazon.com

The art of Cloudy with a chance of meatballs 2 is a beautiful, visually rich art book. As good as the first one, in my opinion. The Cover has the unique feature of folding out to reveal a large, wider image (inside it also has a great 3 page color script on the front endpapers).

Featured inside is a good amount of character design. Not so much for the returning characters compared to the first book, for obvious reasons, but there's plenty of character sketches and paintings of the new characters such as Chester V, Barb the orangutan, and lots of others.

There's also lots of big production images for the different environments and settings which look fantastic. My favorites are the spectacular paintings of the new-look swallow falls showing all sorts of different food landscapes such as Breakfast Bog, Big Rock Candy Mountain and the Pickle Village (made of cheese “Because cheese is fun and can pair nicely with pickles on a charcuterie platter”). There’s also some that never made the final cut.

I loved the creative explorations to create the food/animal hybrids, known as "foodimals". So much fun to see the different combinations- watermelons with elephants, tacos with crocodiles, cheeseburgers with spiders, and all the rest. I really loved this section and I’m glad they dedicated a good amount of the book to it.

Included inside is also a little insert with scratch-and-sniff stickers of some of the foodimals, including a delicious looking (and smelling) crabcake.

In conclusion, this is a fantastic "art of..." book with filled with spectacular, very creative visuals that everyone can enjoy

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and high quality behind the scenes experience 14 Oct 2013
By Kim Mary - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This large hardcover art book takes you behind the scenes of the 'Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2' animation process. It features large and gorgeous pieces of concept art, and takes you on the in-depth adventure of creating the enormous amount of characters - in this case "foodimals" - that are a part of the family adventure. Who knew creating creatures that realistically look like they are made of food-types would be such a challenge? I'd recommend this book for adult animated-movie aficionados, but I'd say it would also be a perfect gift for a teenager who enjoys the 'Cloudy' films.

The 'Cameron + Company' version (there's also a version from Titan Books) includes scratch and sniff stickers!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not nearly as good as the first book. 22 Nov 2013
By Stephalopod - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Much like the sequel itself, the art book is lackluster compared to its predecessor. It's not so much the quality of the art, the works are stellar and inspiring, it's that the previous art book set the bar pretty high with the sizable page count and extras like the stickers (though this book has a few stickers included). I felt that this book glossed over a lot of the stuff I was interested in, there were less character designs and explorations than the first book, which granted a lot of the same characters appeared in the sequel but there weren't many iterations shown of even the new characters. I have no regrets about having this book in my reference/inspiration library, but it just didn't impress like the first one did.
