Product Description

Product Description

London and Paris are the titles of Tiddy Rowan's unique city guides focusing on modern and contemporary art - a genuine gap in the art and travel market. Never before has the contemporary art scene of each city been so comprehensively researched and presented. The guides follow a sound formula -each opens with an essay on the current contemporary art scene by a local art expert in that city, followed by an introduction which presents the art in the context of the city's history and geography to give the reader a feel for the places they might like to visit. The central portion of the books are a fact-packed,stunning, visual A-Z guide to 100 artists, each featuring a representative piece of that artist's work, with an expert commentary and details of everywhere their art can be seen in the city. The A-Z is cross-referenced throughout to the Directory,a comprehensive listing of public and private galleries, public art, art colleges, art tours and other sites where the art can be seen. These in turn are cross-referenced to the maps - one large map on the inside the front cover and ten close-up maps later in the book. The back inside cover has a transport map, making each guide not just inspirational and informative but also practical. Whether you are planning a weekend break, a longer trip or just want to get to know the contemporary art scene in your own city better this series has something for everyone.

Making Art Accessible 17 Oct 2008
Finding the art you wish to view, particularly in a strange metropolis,is not easy. No-one has made it more accessible than Tiddy Rowan in this guide (and the one to Paris).
Writing about art is not easy (check Tom Wolfe's "The Painted Word"). Ms Rowan makes it seem easier than it is. I then went to her work on "Art in the Home" and found she nails it every time.
Her talent? An empathy with both artist and viewer, expressed in perfectly accessible language. She reminds us that simplicity and sophistication make the best of bedfellows. Wherever you travel or live.

I can look/peep/squint at these 2(Paris one as well) smashing beautifully produced, useful and thoroughly imaginative books. What a range of sympathies they have, and Tiddy Rowan has produced such friendly and comprehensive information. I hope that because they allow of/for frequent updating they sell in tens of thousands and have a long life - and the A-Z format makes you think and get engaged. A gap has been filled intelligently and imaginatively.

Dazzling Guide 10 May 2008
By Lloyd
I bought the London and Paris guides and hadn't expected as much as this. Truly fabulous books, nothing seems to be left out. Brilliant biographies of 100 artists in each book, the quality of the images is exceptional and so well chosen. The other thing that impresses me is perfect size for an about town guide.
Hugely recommended
