Full of advice and ideas,
This review is from: Art of Carving Netsuke, The (Paperback)
I really enjoyed this book, both for the advice and the quality of the photography. The book is full of idea and information on how to approach a carving, as well as the more specific projects that can be seen on the title page. As a carver, though as yet less than successful small objects carver, I found the book well worth reading through. Overall, it is well worth the money - though I am yet to carve a netsuke based on the instructions.

The Art of Carving Netsuke,
By John Walker (Essex, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Art of Carving Netsuke, The (Paperback)
Peter Benson's book on 'The Art of Carving Netsuke' is a wonderful collection of techniques and inspiration for aspiring woodcarvers. Its table of contents is identical to Jubb's book, 'Carving Japanese Netsuke for Beginners', which is hardly surprising considering that both authors share the same publisher and editorial team. This does not reduce its value, as Benson offers slightly different concepts of producing miniature sculptures using wood and other materials. Its splendid and detailed photography call for special praise. In addition to carving, both authors discuss the production of small, shop-made tools using nails and scrap metal. Might not a book such as Cain's 'Hardening, Tempering and Heat Treatment' prove useful? Beyond hand tools, I would refrain from purchasing power carving equipment until I had a sense of how my skills were developing. The idea of toxic dust and noise risks dampening early enthusiasm.
