5.0 out of 5 stars one of the best to learn from 20 Dec 2006
By siduri
I bought this book when i already had been doing calligraphy for many years. I wish I had found it at the very beginning. It has very clear illustrations that show, by transparencies indicating the sequences of pen strokes, how to build each letter. I taught several people calligraphy using this book, and it was the best for its clarity of presentation.

Moreover, it is a beautiful book to look at, the selection of fonts is particularly nice, and the presentation of the letters doesn't appear to be touched up with a computer after having been done, so that the they look real, something possible for a beginner to actually aim at copying.

I would recommend it as a first book in calligraphy. There are not too many fonts, and they're well-described and attractive. It was also really useful to me, as a more advanced, but not expert, calligrapher.

If you only ever buy ONE calligraphy book in your lifetime, make it this one above all others. Save yourself the time and bother of looking at anything else.

I have bought this book as I wanted to learn calligraphy, and I found this to be a very helpful and comprehensive book. A great number of calligraphic; styles are introduced, with illustrations on how to draw each letter showing nib angles and strokes which is just what one needs to learn. History of calligraphy and tools are also introduced.
