Not exactly 'basic' 9 Sep 2008
Format:Paperback
Although the tuition is well presented and Woody's playing is highly accomplished, he seems a little more intent on letting you see just how good he can play, than allowing anyone who is new to acoustic blues get close to him. Personally, I found The Blues Guitar Of Keb' Mo' DVD a more relaxed starting point to country style picking and blues fundamentals.

This book/DVD is far from basic. The start of the book contains four short examples of fingerstyle that are not featured on the DVD !! The next section of the book contains five tunes that while featured on the DVD are quite difficult for a beginner to fingerstyle like me to grasp. Although the TAB and chords and music are supplied, the DVD moves too quickly. Why can't basic mean basic?

I am afraid that I will never master fingerstyle as I have not seen a book or DVD that goes through the basics slowly enough and in enough detail to get me involved. The best I have seen is Mel Reeves Acoustic Blues Guitar.

Fantastic stuff! I couldn't think of a better beginning for to learn a fingerpicking (piedmont style) blues. Songs are fun to play and challenging enough to keep you interested. DVD is just great; it gives you everything you would expect. Before every song, Woody explains what he's going to play and why that particular song. After he played it at a normal pace he plays it again very slow explaining his every step; on the video you can well see both right and left hand moves. The transcriptions are not exact note for note but are very close and the rest you can pick from the video. Highly recommended for anyone beginning piedmont style blues. The same goes for the volume 2. of the Art of Acoustic Blues Guitar.
