Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

If you dream of becoming the latest Picasso or fancy brushing up on your artistic skills, now’s your chance as the Nintendo DS Touch Screen transforms into your very own canvas. Art Academy: Learn painting and drawing techniques with step-by-step training gives both budding and experienced artists simple and creative tips and tricks to improve, enhance and even learn how to draw and paint.

Whatever your ability, you’ll find the step-by-step approach to lessons easy to follow. Art Academy offers lessons and art materials to get you started on your initial artistic journey, as well as more advanced art courses for those more adventurous artists wanting to take their art to the next level.

The helpful tutor, Vince, is on hand to show you how to use the art materials and what to draw, as well as teaching you art theory and techniques to explore independently. Some lessons are inspired by work from famous artists such as Albrecht Dürer (German), Paul Cézanne (French), Leonardo da Vinci (Italian), Jan van Huysum (Dutch), John Constable (English) and many more to get your creative juices flowing.

The Touch Screen on the Nintendo DS console enables you to effortlessly paint or draw with realistically-behaving paints and pencils. The pencils come in three different grades of lead: 2B, HB, 2H and also enable you to draw in soft or hard lines to blend and layer your pencil mark. Learn to use the eraser function to create interesting effects and, of course, unlike with a real life painting, should you make any mistakes, these can easily be erased without wasting any paper. The paint function behaves similarly to acrylic paint. The paintbrush set comes in three round or flat brushes allowing you to paint in thick or thin lines simply using your Nintendo DS stylus.

Ten paint tubes make up the game’s basic paint palette and there are 20 empty spaces for you to mix your own original colours. You can also control the amount of paint on your brush to give different effects such as dry brushing, and the level of brush wetness which will affect the transparency of paint to allow for a variety of painting effects in your artwork. Zoom in to your masterpieces to perfect the finer details close up and why not take advantage of the grid function, to help you achieve the right scale and proportions?

Use the Free Paint mode to allow you to freestyle your artwork, letting your imagination run wild and check out the material library for a wide range of stock images to get you inspired. If you are a Nintendo DSi or Nintendo DSi XL owner, why not also use your built-in camera to capture images and redraw them at leisure. With such realistic artist training, you can use your Nintendo DSi & Nintendo DSi XL to help improve painting and drawing skills in real life!

5.0 out of 5 stars The DS was made for this! 12 Aug 2010

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This is fab! A really simple but splendid idea which should appeal to a wide range of people. I am happy to go Mario Karting with the best of them, but in more reflective moments, sitting down and developing a skill (and I do feel that this game can develop a skill beyond just being good at a particular game) is great fun.
The Art Academy consists of a series of lessons which teach you the basic controls, then show you the basics of sketching and painting in different styles. You are led through the lessons step by step by Vincent the artist who demonstrates each step, then allows you to complete the step yourself. You can save the lessons at any point - some take longer than others - and your completed works of art can be saved to the game card. It's a shame that there isn't a way to get the pictures off the DS though. I have been amazed at how good the few pictures I have done so far look not because they are great works of art, but because they look something like what they are supposed to look like! My art teacher from my school days would be amazed as creativity with pencils and paint really isn't my gift!
The other part of Art Academy is the Free Painting section which allows you to really get creative. You can either choose from one of about 50 stock photos included with the game or, if you have a DSI take pictures of your own, and then use all of Art Academy's tools to make a picture.
Using the game is a surprisingly pleasing experience. You soon feel as if you are using a pencil or a paintbrush rather than a stylus. You learn how to mix colours too.
This is an excellent use of the DS - I can't think why no-one has nailed it sooner than this. My only complaint is that I'd have liked a few more lessons - there are 10 main lessons and then some mini lessons to help you practice the skills in the main lessons, perhaps more stock photos, and a means of getting images off the DS (at least on the DSI with its removable memory card). However these are no more than niggles, and certainly not enough to detract from this product's five star rating from me!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little game! 9 Sep 2010

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I recently bought this game for my 11 year old Daughter and it is great. It kept her away from my computer and entertained her for ages. AND, it actually does teach you how to draw! It's a slick little game made by a company called 'Headstrong' here in London and they've done a top job- well worth the money.

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I have always believed I could not draw or paint - thanks to Mr. Taylor, my very critical and unkind art teacher at school. I've never had the confidence to attend an art class as I thought I would be useless so this 'game' let me have a go in the safety of my own home. What a revelation! In easy stages I found that I could accurately draw something. And with the tuition about paint, light and shadow etc. I easily created a picture - some so good I almost didn't believe I'd created them. Well recommended - worth every penny.
