5.0 out of 5 stars An underrated pop classic 19 Nov 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This is undoubtedly one of the best pop albums of all time. The melodies are head and shoulders above most other pop music and the harmonies are simply wonderful. The shimmering production also ranks alongside Phil Spector's best, it is incredibly textured and layered.
Each song is pop perfection and the whole album hangs together beautifully. It is wonderfully evocative of it's era but also a timeless classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magic? 19 Oct 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
When I first heard this album all these years ago it felt like magic. The melodies, the harmonies, the vocals and the arrangements sounded like they were made in heaven. The amazing thing is that I have listened to this album regularly for a quarter of a century and it still sounds magical and I love all the songs. I only learned later which songs were released as singles and I remember thinking that all of them could have been singles.
Best tracks: Knowing Me Knowing You, When I Kissed The Teacher, My Love My Life, Dancing Queen, That's Me, Why Did It Have To Be, Arrival.
PS: The bonust tracks are also great. Happy Hawaii is a completely different version of Why Did It Have To Be Me. I don't know which version I prefer. It would to great to hear alternative versions of other ABBA songs. When is that ABBA Anthology due? I am sure it would be quite amazing to hear how their songs developed through the different stages of recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars Abba at their best 24 July 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Abba really started to hit the big time with the release of this album in 1976 and on listening it does not take many minutes to work out why. It kicks off with the brilliant When I Kissed The Teacher and then takes you on a wonderful, if not a little short, journey through some of the best music Abba ever produced. The true gems on the Album are That's Me, When I Kissed The Teacher, Tiger (which should have been released as single in my opinion) and the title track, Arrival a wonderful instrumental. Although, the tracks Dum Dum Diddle and Why Did It Have To Be do not exactly aid those who want to stop people regarding Abba as naff they are an unmissable part of the album. A brilliant record.

5.0 out of 5 stars You can dance, you can jive... 21 July 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
1976 was a big year for ABBA - a year in which they had no less than three consecutive number one hits in the UK, with 'Mamma Mia', 'Fernando' and the magnificent 'Dancing Queen', which went to the top of the charts in practically every country it was released, including the USA, where it was to be the group's only number one single.
This album is significant not only because it contains three of ABBA's biggest and most well known chart hits ('Knowing Me, Knowing You', 'Money, Money, Money' and the aforementioned 'Dancing Queen', all of which reached the Top Ten in most territories), but because it marked a turning point in the famous 'ABBA sound'. From this album until the last the sound was more polished, the chosen songs were of the highest standard and the overall product and presentation (including the sleeve design) more professional. This was initially the first LP to feature the easily recognisable ABBA logo (with one 'B' reversed) on its sleeve. As the band grew in popularity, a logo was needed to reflect their international superstar status.
Sound-wise, ABBA improved and matured with each new album, so why is 'Arrival' my favourite, rather than 'Super Trouper' or 'The Visitors'? Simply because it consists from start to finish of pure, uplifting pop, with a bright and lively feel to it. This album sees the group caught somewhere between their earlier, 'teenage' style and the more sophisticated later one. It has a richer, deeper sound than their previous albums, while still being fairly lightweight and poppy.
