5.0 out of 5 stars Great as ever! 30 Jan 2012
By ch22
Format:Audio CD
Just took delivery and couldn`t wait to listen to it. Tracks I hadn`t heard before were brilliant and the remastering made a huge difference. Although I have the single the sound quality on "I will survive" is even better on this compilation. The sleeve notes were also extensive.I am so pleased someone decided to develop this project.Well worth the effort. Arrival, wherever you are now, know that your music still stands the test of time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some people must be sooooo hard to please!!! 5 Feb 2012
Format:Audio CD
As my title suggests... some people must be sooo hard to please!!! I have been a fan of Arrival since their first single "Friends" was released. I bought their only two vinyl albums 40 years ago and, obviously over the years they have become scratched etc. When I received my Complete Collection CD on 1st February I put it on and waited for it to jump in the same places my vinyl albums do. I was also waiting for hisses and pops.... and none came!!! I may not be a qualified musician, but I recognise decent quality sound when I hear it and I was absolutely delighted and thrilled with the remastered sound quality on these CD's!!! For goodness sake - these songs are over 40 years old!!!! The never before released by Arrival bonus tracks were also a indeed a terrific bonus!!! Oh how the memories of my teens years came flooding back! The harmonies are wonderful as only Arrival can do!! Please, please buy this album!

4.0 out of 5 stars A glass half full half empty. 25 May 2012

Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
If you spent 40 years looking for this album, you must be ecstatic happy right now, and you will continue to be!!!
This album sounds good.

My ears tell me that this was mastered from a 33 1/3 RPM Vinyl Long Play Record, not from Magnetic Tapes. It went through de-clicking software so you don' hear any clicks, but there is that unmistakable noise from the groove itself. Most of the time it is masked by the music, but when the piano goes pianissimo, there it is. There is also a tiny little bit of distortion in the vocals caused because the needle (yes, they had to use a needle) couldn't keep up with the intricacies of the complex wave shapes of the leading vocals. (Or their record had some wear) When there is a lot of instruments playing, it does not sound distorted, but when it goes "unplugged" yes it does. Sounds like if a compressor poorly set was applied to some vocals originally at the studio, but it is not the case. The songs that originally resided in the inner grooves have more of this distortion than the ones on the outer grooves. That is the signature sound of the needle hitting the groove perpendicularly on the outer grooves, (good) and hitting the groove at a different angle on the inner grooves. Back in the heydays of Long Play Records "Tangential" turntables were invented to overcome this issue, but they are uncommon nowadays, and there were not used in this case.

"Not Right Now" is one of the tracks that suffered the most, but what a beautiful song it is, and what a heartfelt performance. Think of it as an archeological treasure, and forgive the minor technical nuisances. Listen with your heart.

I bought the Arrival LP from 1970 40 years ago. Teenager as I was it got worn and scratched.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great Art - Bad Tech 13 May 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Arrival's work deserves a much better revival than this. As other reviewers have noted, the technical quality of this CD is poor. I think these are cleaned up transcriptions from original Vinyl - not at all done from masters - and not done all that well, either.

Give or take a few clicks and pops, my original single of "I Will Survive" sounds marginally better than the muddy version on offer from this CD, as does my single of "Friends". Listen to the section of "I will Survive" after the second chorus - leading into the instrumental bridge - if you want to hear it at its worst. Given the care and love that have so obviously gone into the liner notes and artwork, you have to wonder if the original master tapes are lost now, or perhaps the Decca archive refused access to them?

However, if you don't already have Arrival music in original format then do buy this CD. The art transcends the technical problems and this is GOOD music. It's just that the technical side of things should have been so very much better.

Oh, and "Friends" is the album version - not the Mono single version which, as somebody has already said, ended with a massive elongated piano chord, not the repeat fade out offered here: This reinforces the suspicion that these are just LP transcriptions. Also a bit odd that this discrepancy is not mentioned or explained in the liner notes (so far as I could find anyway!).

P.S> For anyone wondering if "I Will Survive" is the same song that Gloria Gaynor made famous, no it's not. Her song is about surviving relationship break ups. This song is about surviving more general kinds of oppressions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb!! 3 Feb 2012
Format:Audio CD
I've only ever heard Arrival on scratchy old vinyl, so was looking forward to hearing these tracks in a much better format. I was not disappointed! I note the comments from other reviewers regarding the sound quality, but I must say I cannot disagree more. The quality is superb. I would perhaps suggest that a better sound system would make a difference to those that have had issues - playing it very loudly through my DVD surround system caused me no problems at all, and it sounded fantastic - infinitely better than the original vinyl. I have played it through my laptop though, and some of the quality is lost, but not by very much at all, and quite honestly I'd expect this from any recording. This for me just goes to show that it's the sound system at fault, not the sound quality of the CD. Listeners should probably also remember that these tracks were recorded decades ago in mono. Recording technology back then was nowhere near the quality that we have come to expect from today's recordings. With all this taken into account, I would urge anyone to buy this CD, listen to it on a decent system, and be awed and inspired by the amazing voices and musicians that are Arrival.
As for the tracks themselves, the harmonies are wonderful, and the melodies and lyrics dazzling. The CD is crammed with incredible tracks, and several will make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. My personal favourite is 'I will Survive'. It makes me tingle all over, and in my opinion is one of the greatest pieces of music of all time.
Arrival - pure talent. I cannot recommend this collection highly enough.
